TM701L 7" RCA resolution

I'm looking into buying a tm701L 7" screen which has a resolution of 800x480. It only has RCA video inputs from what i know.

my laptop video card has only S-video (TV-out), but i have a S-video to RCA converter.
i'm wondering if i use the laptop to output, will the screen be clear? i read that tv-out would be 640x480. would powerstrip help fix the resolution to run at 800x480?

thanks

It wouldn't really matter. It'll probably still be hard to read, even if you do get the output resolution up to 800x600/800x480.

Does the laptop not have a VGA output, or capability at all?

the laptop does have a VGA output
but the TM701L doesn't

and from what i searched up, people can modify it with a VGA controller so that it does support VGA input.

but for the price i'm getting the 701 for, and being a first project for me, i think composite input should suffice. if i want to websurf, i'll just pull out the laptop.

Bottom line: You will be disappointed. The money you use trying to tweak the image to look barely acceptable will exceed the difference between this and a low-end VGA 7" LCD with no touchscreen which will be great.

You're lucky, you haven't bought it yet. The message archives are full of posts from people who have already spent the money and afterwards realized what a mistake they've made.

so you're saying if i played a dvd or other videos on this screen, that it will look like crap?

after reading a bunch of topics, i'm under the impression that only looking at fonts were a problem with composite video

If you're installing a car computer, then you will regret it. If you're going to use it to show the movies you're playing on your Kraco 12v DVD-Player, then go for it. But the moment you bring a front-end, PC GPS, mp3, etc into the picture, you're gonna look into the sunset and shed a small tear.

Since you're posting to Mp3Car.com and not 'carstereoinstallhelp.com', I'm pretty confident this applies to you.

Hey, there's no law that says you HAVE to listen to us, but just be aware that you're making a conscious decision to ignore the first-hand experience that others in this group have had.

thanks for the advice
i do want to go for a VGA screen, but the $200 difference in price is what leads me to a composite. perhaps in the future when i have enough funding i'll upgrade. there will be newer VGA screens, so the older VGA ones will be cheaper. i don't need the latest and greatest, just something with quality.

i don't have GPS and i have a laptop if i need to view documents and whatnot

and i believe a TM701 + laptop has similar quality than some of those $1000 dedicated DVD players.

$200 difference? What?!

I see 7" VGA LCDs for like $160-170 on eBay. What are you smoking?

I don't really care I don't have vga that much, it would be nice but I can read the composite I got (front ends are easy, gps is bareabe but pushing it), the real reason I regret not buying a lilliput etc (and probably will in the future) is because I want a touchscreen.

thats ok but because the composite can become a rear screen.

If you don't want VGA screen now, that is okay. Buy a composite screen and test it out if that works for you. If not, you are going to buy another VGA screen. Save that composite screen for the rear.
Touch screen is a cool feature/toy to have but it will degrade the screen output (Brightness is reduce, more glare).

thanks for the tip
and yes, i could always make it a rear screen if i'm not satisfied with it. i'm getting it at a good price, so i don't mind.

and all the GOOd VGA lcd's on ebay are at least 200+

You realize that even a crappy VGA LCD is going to be far superior to the monitor you're getting, right? far far far far superior. You still didn't mention where the '$200 difference' figure came from. Also, how much is a 'good price' that you're spending?

It's okay, he's been warned. Making the decision with eyes wide open.

$100 vid screen + $200 used VGA = $300. New VGA = $270.

Just as long as you realize that.
