Question lcds not working

I just got 2 lcds, a 2x40 and a 4x20.
I tried hooking both of them up, but neither seems to want to work. I plug them in, and a all the blocks go black, but then when I plug them into the LPT port, they go out, and the seperate power supply I am using to power the LCD switches off. What am I doing wrong?

sounds like you've got a short in there somewhere. where did you get these? do you know that they work? did you assemble anything yourself? which LCDs exactly do you have? have you tried them on anything else?

I had the same problem. Check (and recheck if necessary) your data cable. Mine was a short caused by a wrong wiring.
