Question Help to find 12 volt input and ground on inverter from laptop.

If I use some kinda of 12 volt tester grounded to another source, can I find out which pin is the 12 volt input for the little inverter that drives my Sharp LQ94D021 TFT or do I have to ground it to the inverters ground?
And can I fry my LCD or inverter by trying to find the + and -?
The input on the inverter is a flat 5-7pin ribbon cable. This machine was a Dell Lattitude XP 4100cx.
