Post Controlling an HD44780 LCD vias USB?

Has this been done? Where can I find info on it? I have 2 Seiko LCD's, a 4x40 and a 4x20. I will be using Linux as my OS, so that may be a problem, too. Can any of you guys help me out here? Thanks
