Messed up VGA/USB cable

I had my lilliput working fine. The cable did not reach to the passenger seat so I went out and bought a VGA extension cable and a regular 10ft USB cable. I connected the vga and worked fine. Now for the Usb cable, I spliced the original usb/vga cable to connect the extension usb cable. Wired the cables, red, white, black, yellow. Then I connected the usb cable back to the pc and now windows said it did not recognize the device. Sometimes, one in out of 30 tries I got it to recognize. But failed to install. Now I rewired back the original usb plug and it is the same. Have any of you guys spliced the cables to extend them? If so did you have any problems?

I know it doesn't help now, but you should have bought a bone fide USB extension cable (female to male) and used that instead. It keeps you from hacking the original cable (which obviously didn't work) and makes everything much easier to uninstall if you need to move anything...

Regardless, you can get a replacement USB/VGA cable from Armen for $15, so I'd say just go that route and get an extension for the USB and avoid the hassle.

The max cable length recommended between a USB computer and USB interface is 5 meters. Longer runs can be achieved thru the use of POWERED USB HUBS. not your problem is it?

yeah i suspect you have a bad connection that is effectively taking you over the 5m limit. I would get a new USB connector and solder it to where you cut the cable and then connect a USB extension.

good luck

Thanks guys but I have already wired back the original usb plug and one out of a million tries it works. Ive even tried to twist the wires how they are originally. I know i should of bought a female male extension but i wanted to have my carpc finished.. Anyone of you have hacked (spliced) the wires before?

you could open up your screen and solder a new lead direct to the controller. but be careful. Splicing the wires should not mess it up as one of the xenarc mods is to do that to get it powered off the PC not the screen.

if you have not touched any part of the lead from the screen then just go buy a new lead and use the 9 pin DIN extension from the mp3car store or use USB and VGA extensions. Dont cut anything unless you have to.
