Post Looking for a monitor

Sorry if this has been beaten to death, but I'm looking for a 5-6" VGA LCD screen I can use for the car PC I'm building. I've found a bunch that are just a tad too large. I need the VGA because in addition to playing MP3's I also want to run the diagnostic software for my VW that is pretty text intensive. It does not matter if it is color.

It needs to fit in the lower cubby of my dash. See pic.

The rough dimensions are about 5.5" wide by 4" high.

Thanks!

There won't be any 6" LCDs that will fit in this space (smallest I've found is 7" X 5"), but you might be able to find a 5" display.
The Phillips LTE052T-061 is a 5" TFT LCD that measures 5" W X 4" H, but the resolution is 320 X 240. It's compatible with the C&T 65550 display controller, which means it can be driven directly from most SBCs or you could pick up a controller card. Haven't been able ot find a place to buy or a price though , but I imagine it won't be cheap. Given your size requirements, you might have to go with an NTSC display (I'm using the 4" LCD from PartsExpress and it's not that bad) and a TV-Out video card. I'm using a scan converter to convert the VGA signal to NTSC, and it does a better job than most video cards with TV-out that I have seen. Just use a big font!
Best of luck!

Looking at that picture of your dash, could you not easily remove the ashtray and lighter to give yourself more room? This would also allow you to moun tthe screen higher so it wouldn't be hidden behind the shifter. Just a thought...

Well, I suppose I could remove them but there is a pretty hefty divider that is not removable under the ash tray and lighter. I'd rather not hack up the car too much..

However that 5.5" wide measurement is the lower measurement. I don't think I could gain much width by removing them...

Hello fellow Vortex'er
I post as *****in'corrado on the 'tex

I've got a 20x4 text lcd where the ashtray is right now, but have been planing on getting a screen as soon as funds allow
You'd have a lot more space if you where willing to lose the cig lighter and ashtray, but I don't want to lose my cubby hole, so i've been thinking of doing a roof flip-down screen where the sunroof switch is.

Ebay is probably your best bet for finding an affordable screen.
Good taste in cars btw
