i don't understand windows resolution adjustments

so i tried powerstrip to try to customize my resolution settings. so i am one of a many lucky to have uncustomizable resolutions in windows.. however, i was playing around in snes9x in full screen and it allows you to change resolutions to 640x400, 512x384, 320x240..which should all be default resolutions embedded into any video card. sure enough, those resolutions work, so it's not a hardware issue of implementing those resolutions.

would it even be remotely possible to add those resolutions to the windows display properties/ through the registry/ how about 720x400.

i already know i can't use 800x480, or any of those typical widescreen resolutions for my lcd
i don't know of many other resolution customization programs other than powerstrip..

i ran a using keywords - resolution, 800x400, 640x400, 720x400, powerstrip. none of the results i looked through seemed to discuss this idea.

well..found a way to use command prompt multires to set the screen to use 640x400, but i guess 720x400 is a custom resolution that it won't allow.
my guess is that 640x400 is a standard vesa resolution..

looks better at 640x400 for what i use it for currently..finally a widescreen resolution for a widescreen display. nothing looks as stretched as it was in 640x480 or 800x600.

i know this thread is old, but i can't leave a question unanswered.

once you have multires installed, use this at the command prompt:
multires.exe /1:640,400,32,60

sets 640x400, 32bit color, 60Hz refresh.
