video RAM for Advantech PCM-5862

I've got an advantech PCM-5862 SBC with a 400 mhz powerleap processor and 128 mb ram.

I'd like to be able to play full screen video (avi or divx) in 640x480, but it is really choppy. I noticed that it only has 1mb video ram, with room for one more mb. So i put in a 2 mb pci card and that fixed the problem.

However, I would like to be able to use the on-board video because there is a flat panel controller built in. Does anyone know of a source for extra video RAM? I've never even seen it marketed, but I'm sure it must be out there.

just had another brainstorm - would it be possible to pop some vram out of an old PCI card and use it on this board?

Woohoo! I got it.

I pulled 1 meg of video RAM off an old Trident card I had laying around in my "box of toys" and put it in. It booted and now runs full-screen video at 640x480 smoothly!

note: Also, for the others that own this, the video drivers from Advantech are slightly better than the stock ones in Windows 98.

I have an EM-586 that I haven't gotten around to getting hooked up that I hope I can hook an LCD up to without a controller...I guess you have to check the bios to see which ones it supports?

Good tip, thanks. I actually looked through my box of old cards a few weeks ago but couldn't find one with the right VRAM that wasn't soldered on. Which processor did you say you were using? I'm using a K6-2-300 but I didn't think the 5862 would go higher than that.

I am using a Powerleap PL-K6-III/400 CPU upgrade. It works beautifully. Not sure about the performance difference between that and a K6-2/300. Only downside is that it is an inch or so taller than it would have been without the upgrade. At $99, It's a little pricey, but it comes with the CPU, so all you have to do is pop it in and go. It's a hell of a lot cheaper than a LCD controller, and the formfactor of the board is nice

Rick McEwen: How did you get the K6-2 300 to run on a 5862? I also have this board, and I thought it only went up to K6 (not K6-2) or a P-233 MMX. I have a K6-2 400 which I would love to install on this board. I know that it wouldn't run at the 100Mhz FSB that the K6-2 400 is designed for, but could I clock it down to a K6-2 300?
Meatballman: What exactly does the Powerleap upgrade do? I thought it jsut regulated the voltage. Are you running the bus at 100Mhz or at 66?
I've got a P-200MMX in my 5862 right now, and the performance leaves something to be desired. On the plus side, I noticed that my SBC came with 2MB video RAM installed, so I got luck there.

I'm running the bus speed at 66mhz. I just plugged it in, and booted to a very nice 400 mhz. I'm not sure what kind of magic and wizardry they put in those things, but it appears to work. I know it does more than adjust the voltage though. You can adjust the multiplier on the upgrade itself, so I know it controls all the multiplier settings.
I think it's running at 66 mhz x 6. I believe you can crank the bus speed up even a little more and squeeze a few extra out of it, but I don't want to worry about the extra heat, etc..

I'm running a K6-2 350 on mine without a problem

66 bus * 5.5 = 363Mhz (close enough)
