Installing CD/DVD in Xenarc 700IDT
Anyone with a Xenarc 700IDT try to install a CD into the empty space under the display? The faceplate clearly has a cutout that fits a slim cd.
I was wondering where I would install my DVD with easy access then while taking apart my 700IDT for *****s and giggles I noticed what looks like mounting points. There is enough room in the area but mounting and securing it will require a little customization.

It's probably a good plan to take apart the IDT before installing it anyway - they seem to have lots of loose screws, so it provides a chance to tighten and thread-lock everything.
Good luck with fitting optical drive - sounds like a good solution.

It could DEFINITELY be done. In fact, it's nearly the perfect size of a slimline drive. I had an external slimline drive (a slimline drive in an external case. The external case added a few mm's to each side of the slimline drive so it couldn't fit in. But, I have a VERY GOOD feeling, a bare slimline drive would fit perfectly in that slot.
I even think that you would be within the warranty limits, cause all you would need to do is drill two cutouts in the back of the 700IDT to feed the power and USB cable for the drive. I sold my unit to russman2000, so hopefully he will have some luck with this.

Just had mine apart because I'm having problems, you can put one in, I'm planning on doing it myself. It has a connector on the board to power a cd/dvd drive. And yes you do want to tighten those screws up, half of mine were loose, plus they used too small of a screw on the small power board that attached it to the chassie. It was piratically just laying there. If it would of come out and set on top that board, kiss that thing goodbye. I'm very disappointed in the quality...

I'm working on getting the slim slot-load drive. It sucks being a responsible adult.
If this can be pulled off, however, then I've made my monitor choice.

If there is a power connection on the board then the only other connection would be data right?
I am presuming you will need a slim-line drive, connecting into this, a slim to ide converter (the one that comes with the slim drives in mp3car store) and from this into a ide to usb converter.
First, will all this stuff fit inside the empty space?
I would imagine if xenarc do fit one all this stuff will be fitted to the main pcb?
Second, if it will fit, could the usb plug be cut off the ide/usb converter and the wires spliced/soldered to the touchscreen's usb connecter.
Will two devices work on one socket? (i thought i read somplace that usb devices all transmit a unique id so you can connect loads up together)
Not only would this save you the risk of drilling holes in the back of the case but my dash is SERIOUSLY TIGHT on getting that damm xenarc loom through places!

This is my first post in mp3car forum, but i've been reading this forum for a long time .
I have successfully installed a slim dvd-rom into a xenarx 700IDT, with its ide adapter and an ide to usb 2.0 converter.
This is the post where you can see the "howto" (in spanish):
http://www.solocarputer.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=3229
I am going to install this screen in a VW GOLF V 1.9 tdi sportline.
You can see the progress of my carputer here:

I am from spain, sorry for my english.

Well, I'm sold on the 700IDT, then.
Hell, I dnt even have to squeeze the USB-IDE adapter in there, since mine will be run off IDE, since it's close enough.

Visenri,
How did you attach the DVD drive to the Xenarc case? I can't see how the holes on the CD/DVD slimline drive match up with the holes in the bottom of the Xenarc case?
I would really like to install my drive if you can give some tips on this.
Thanks...

It is not attached to the case.
This little quantity of glue holds the dvd-reader in place.
When you remove the plastic in the front to make the hole for the reader, you'll see there is a place to put the reader (i am sure xenarc is going to put a reader in the next version) and keep it in place, be sure to make the hole a little smaller than the reader, so it keeps in place blocked by the front plastic and the glue in the ide connector. You need no screws .
