help extending high voltage wires to CCFL

I am doing a modification to my Xenarc 700TSV which requires me to move the CCFL inverter about 5 inches further away from the LCD module than it used to be in the original packaging. In order to do this I need to extend the length of the high voltage wires.

The wire connecting the inverter to the high voltage connector is marked as 3KVDC and it's insulation feels more rubbery and flexible than normal equipment wire. I attribute this to a different insulating material and a small diameter conductor.

I've looked around (UK suppliers) and I can't find any specialist wire with this rating. Could I get away with using more normal equipment wire without seeing insulation breakdown?

most test lead wire can handle it, too. and high quality grade electrical tape is good for insulating 500v per turn of tape

be very careful buddy.. this is how I busted my CCFL and now I'm gettin up ****s creek finding a replacement

Punisher, yeah I've just read over your post history - sounds bad. Do you know for sure it's the CCFL that has died? I just wonder why it's the tube that would break in a situation where the HT supply leads either shorted or arced to ground. Surely in either of these situations the tube would simply see a reduced voltage. (Maybe there's something about CCFLs I don't understand that would actually cause this situation to be damaging). I can see the inverter taking some punishment if the HT outputs were partially shorted via arcing, and I can see how a VGA controller board wouldn't fare too well if it's acting as a return path for a couple of KV.

I'm just trying to get my head around this.

Welp, what happened was, I didn't take the CCFL out when I was trying to lengthen the wires. Hell I was successful in lengthening them.. no issue.. used 3 layers of heat shrink.. was nice.. But the wire on the ccfl was a PITA.. under the rubber insulation it had some plastic insulation.. tough to get to the bare wire.. Apparently I pulled to hard on the one wire (red one) and the bulb cracked where the wire lead goes into the bulb.. I found this out AFTER i took the bulb out.. bleh.

Just sayin, be careful.. if you can, take the bulb out first..

(btw, don't say something weak like you don't know much about ccfl's or scousemonkey will come in and flame ya and get all ****y)

this is what you should use, although for a 5" extention you will be ok with test lead wire

James, if you are in the uk a company called visualux sells the cables and connectors.

The wire you need is designed for high voltage - normally silicone insulated and the connectors have a high dielectric.
