can't speak for marko's setup, but for mine there are several advantages.
A single cable to run an lcd panel makes custom installs much easier. No lcd controller to mount and power, which reduces bulk. Plus, with only 1 cable attached to the motherboard, installing the pc farther away from the screen is easier. Also, the lcd is powered on/off with the pc, so no need to run seperate switches. trying to run usb and vga cables to a panel in dash can sometimes be bulky. Mounting depth is reduced to only the thickness of the lcd panel, since no control boards, etc. are behind it.
Heat, since no controller is present, that means 1 less heat producing item to deal with (read 1 less item to fail due to poor cooling/air flow)

Granted, you limit yourself to using this type of setup to the mainboard, since you couldn't just connect any computer to it, but if you are not going to need a monster pc in your car, the epia and commell boards w/lvds option are more than sufficient.
