can i hook this monitor directly to my car?

th sticky says:

*Powering a 12V rated CCFL inverter off a 12.8V battery could actually cause an output current increase of 5%. This is turn could reduce the life of the CCFL by up to 10%

*A voltage spike on a DC-AC converter can cause flickering and damage to the lamp and inverter

...does this apply to this monitor?

if your car's voltage is spiking from 8 to 17 volts, you have problems. At no point during vehicle operation should your charging system EVER produce more than 14 volts. When your battery is low, say after cranking or even a dead battery running from say a jump start, your alternator will go full field and supply maximum voltage to your battery and electrical system. This will be 13.8 volts, +/- .2v.

no. the inverter is powered from regulated voltage off the lcd controller inside the monitor. It will receive constant 12v.
