I was waiting for new backlight upgrade too but never arrived. So I started to try some SMD LED solutions.

Well i know Jcdillin is working on two projects, The whole upgrade including the tubes is on hold because of sourcing problems.

The inverter upgrade however is being activly worked on. The is what he is using right now and it is sunlight readable. JCDillin has been sourcing and testing different inverters that support PWM. The thought is to use two sources to change the brightness, 1 button (similar to the lilliput except have more bightness levels) or an photocell that will read the brightness and adjust automatically.

Keep an eye out for a thread detailing this soon.

All the credit goes to JCDillin on this one

An invertor upgrade will kill the backlight pretty quickly. A ccfl has a half life in terms of brightness. Upgrading the invertor lets you drive it brighter but it also reduce the half life. Since you can realistically expect 2-3 years of life if you are lucky (I got 9 months from my lilliput before the brightness had dropped very noticably), driving it harder with a more powerful invertor means you reduce that - usually by quite a bit. I really don't want to have a solution that involves replacing my ccfls every 6 months.

What's the difference, the lilli's don't usually last longer than that anyway

thats right me 5 lilli's last about 4 weeks (each)

my xenarc now runs since 8 month without any error or fault.

and there I won't risk to burn my ccfl

I ran mine for 10 months without any reduction in brightnes. So I really dont see how the stock inverter/lamp combos are getting dimmer after just 9 months, maybe faulty parts or crappy tubes. But I have ran my overdriven tube now for over 10 months and it's still just as bright as when I first started with it. So even if for some reason it decides to get dim here in the next few months i'll just slap another LCD in and go to town. Even if I replace it every year thats only a $100 a year for a LCD panel ($100 is a rough estimate, most I have been able to get for less than $50). So after 5 years i'll end up costing about the same as the LED backlights, just without the heat and all at once expense.

Well, since my CCFL is already toast. I may as well experiment - how did you upgrade your invertor?

It's not just the frequent upgrades - it's the hassle of having to take apart the dash in order to replace bits of the monitor and the risk of breaking the monitor each time and being without your screen until you get a replacement.
