Motorized VS Non Motorized

Just curious about the pros/cons of motorized vs non-motorized in dash LCDs.

My first concern about the motorized is simply the fact there is more stuff involved to break. Also they seem to move slowly (not that my PC boots faster than they come out)

I'm not even considering getting a motorized due to price, just curious.

One thing about non-motorized that I think is major is that a lot of them pivot left/right.

Any other thoughts?

Well since I just got my non-motorized I'd like to say one con would be the "wear and tear" on physically adjusting the screen... This has not proven to be an issue yet but I can foresee it.

One pro would be that the tilt is fully adjustable from 0(facedown) -> ~135 degrees(facing up @ about 45 degrees)

I just got a motorized unit (the only one mp3car store had) and so far I like it.
The fact it takes awhile to open/close isn't a big deal since it does that mostly when I'm not paying attention to it. (getting out of the car or getting myself belted in)
As for reliability, we'll see.

well i dont think its possible for me to pull out and turn up a screen faster than the motorized unit moves.. so while it may be slow, its faster than the alternative. not to mention my screen takes a SOLID 5 seconds before anything is displayed.

Tru. I personally prefer motorized screens because all you have to do is press a button (or sometimes it happens with signal activation) and the screen slowly (and with good screens, smoothly) ejects and then tilts upwards to a right-angle to expose the display in all its glory. It's a luxury more than anything else. I also prefer motorized screens because it reduces the "STEAL ME" appeal. An LCD sticking out from someone's dashboard is, to me, more tempting to a potential criminal than an LCD screen that is hidden. So I guess at this stage, I would like to have a motorized (for safety) LCD screen in one DIN slot, and my car PC in the second DIN slot.

Having said that, it would still be possible to have a non-motorized LCD screen that will not have the STEAL ME appeal. Instead of installing it on a mount and having it stick out of the dash, how about installing it in the double din slot (if you car has double din)? And install it a centimetre or two inwards, so that you can put a cover in front of the screen. You can then install little rails on the top side edges, and then when you want to use your car PC, all you have to do is roll the cover up and it will move along the rails, and then the cover will be sitting horizontally above the screen (obviously inside the din slot) and your screen will be exposed.

It seems like the Double Din Dash (3D) install is actually the most popular install style here.. I was intending on making a fake crap radio coverplate to cover this up so that no one sees anything worth stealing, like you said.. but I'll have to see if I can get the screen to work again first, though. =\.

I asked myself the same questions before choosing which screen to buy (motorized or non-mot.).

I did a lot of research and found out that most people commented that the motorized screens were rather flimsy when pressing on the screens. I had a non-motorized screen in the past, and pretty much knew what to expect with those.

Non-motorized screens have the rotating mount usually in the middle on the back of the screen. The motorized ones are typically on the end that they come out of. You can see why they are called flimsy.

You also have to deal with issues of failure in the future. I still have my first screen that's about 3 years old now. If it had been motorized and that broke, it would have been a pain. Sure it takes more effort to pull it out manually, but when you spend hundreds of dollars on a screen, I would want it to last for quite some time. I have not had any wear and tear issues with my 3 year old screen, in terms of adjusting (just normal wear on the touchscreen filter).

Just through searching I found a lot of people that had problems with their motors after using for a while - and I haven't found a single related issue with a non-motorized screen. Just seems like their more rugged. Besides, if your motorized screen stops working, you'll have to leave it out all the time? Forget that, that's just inviting someone to steal it.

Like Meem mentioned above, he likes motorized screens for their ease of use and as a luxury. Guess what he'll have to do once/if it breaks - spend hundreds to get another one. We are creatures of habit, once you get used to something like a motorized screen, you probably won't want to do without one.

soo. uh. from your post, im getting the impression that there are "enclosures" just lik the "motorized mount' that donjt have motors? is this true?? I was just about to start designing and building one that didnt use motors. I want the concealability of an in dash enclosure, and I want to build it with a slot load cdrom in the base so I can get rid of my head unit.

How well do touchscreens handle cold weather?

I live in the Midwest where winters get quite cold and I'm concerned that the monitor might freeze up or be real lathargic after a cold night. Maybe I'm worrying about nothing but I'd rather find out now than after I buy one.
