i know its been asked before

I know it's been asked before.. about a laptop screen being used as a monitor... I was reading some other forums and one mentioned everything needed to connect a signal from the computer is on the motherboard of the laptop itself...but no diagrams or any other info... So if I have an old laptop I don't use any more... is there a way to hardwire a vga to the board itself and let the board somehow convert and send the signal to the monitor? If so, does anyone know how to do this?
