microprocessor vs carpc

I wanted to make a display to control some aspects of the car, not using the phidgets. I want to do something that is more similar to james bond where the screen starts up and has the options, although few, available. Its been a long time since I worked with microprocessors, and all they did was output 0 or 5V, no display. There are a few things out there that I can't remember the name of (little servers the size of dollar coin). If anyone knows of anything like this that doesn't need a windows operating program, and can use a real display with color instead two colors, let me know.
later,
Kenny

You may be thinking of Dallas Semiconductor's TINI platform.

I actually don't have a clue what I am thinking of, I just know its possible. I just know the possibility exists, just not sure how to do it. If you are talking abgou the miniature server, its something else. If I can remember the name, I will post it. They make a couple different versions, and are only around 100 for the hardware, and the developement kit is around 300. It has its own IP address, and really cool for its purposes which I don't remember. I didn't get into it, i just had to read values from it and test them at the time. Crap, going to be on mind for awhile now.

Ive been racking my brain trying to come with a way to have a display show what I want when I turn on the car. It would have to be an embedded system I assume, I guess I am trying to see if I can create my own affordably. I want to use my touch screen to control everything in the car, but don't want to use another computer or the existing one, I want it available when I turn the car on. I think Im just dreaming.
later,
K

I don't know about color, but I do know that there are Microprocessors with built-in display support (small displays, nothing like VGA). The ATMEL ATMEGA series is what I use (take a look at the 169 and the butterfly board). You could also look into ARM processors (what Palms and like use), but I don't know anything about them.

Gut a palm and mold it into the dash and supply its power from the battery and you got youself a transporter style terminal.
