Question 3 din / verticle monitor

I have been searching the web for a 3 din monitor. Does such a thing exist?

I am just starting to get into the carputer thing, but I feel confident I could move or use some other control device for my climate control (I would love the computer to eventually do it, I think I've seen some people pull that off).

So the desired effect would be a portrait-oriented monitor that looks like it had to be stuffed into my dash. I would like it to be a touch monitor, too, but that's secondary to the size. Everything I see seems to be meant to fit landscape-wise, and the sizes jump from 8" to 10.4" to 14". Am I the only one that thinks mounting a monitor vertically would be AWSOME?

although not completely perfect 3 din... the 8" or 8.4 I think fits almost perfectly in a 3 din opening... I am hoping to do this with my 8.4 that I'm building right now with the backlight upgrade... there is a guy that did this...

and ended up with this...

SWEET! thanks! so now comes the inevitable question, can it be done as a touch screen? If I remember correctly, the tablet PCs are specifically designed to take input only from the stylus. Are there touch adapters for any size screen including widescreen laptops like that one?

The screen in the pictures dmcdlrn posted is a touchscreen monitor.... he says it's a Lilliput 809GL in the thread.
(if you are referring to freelander's link then disregard this)

second that... its a touch screen... so is my 8.4. You can do a touch screen for just about anything without any more space really... touch panels themselves are only about an 1/8" thick and are supposed to be the same size as the screen size... then you have a small controller board and ribbon cable...

yeah, actually i was referring to freelander's link. I may end up using an 8" because I don't want to modify much more than the hard plastic din slots, certaily not as drasticly as that mini-van, but I love how the screen in that one has almost no bezel around it. I really want it to look like it's the biggest thing i could possibly cram in.

I run a laptop. I don't know which is easier... laptop is much more compact though..

I am revamping and using a docking station this year so I can use the laptop's internal sound card... the docking station has a pci slot plus space under it to stick my fm tuner... and usb is all I need for devices... Normally you can buy a stock dc to dc for your machine thats designed to work... also designed to create less heat and consume less power.. plus it has a battery allready built in so it will last a crank...

downside is they are more expensive and less available typically, also less versitile normally cause of no pci slots.

But, you have to read and make up your own mind... I chose laptop and I think it was the right choice for ME... good luck!
