Slot Load DVD in LCD Touch Screen
I'm surprised that with all the searching I've done on google and these forums I can't seem to find a manufactured single DIN fold out (either manual or mechanical) TFT LCD VGA touchscreen WITH a built in slot load DVD drive with a USB interface or something... Does such a unit exist? I just thought this would be a great idea because I am looking at building a VoomPC/Ampie (whatever you want to call it) and the biggest complaint that most people have is that there is no room for an optical drive. Well wouldn't it be better if the drive were integrated into the screen unit on the dash and all you have to do is run two USB cables and a VGA cable (one USB for optical drive, one for touch screen)?
Anyway, if such a product doesn't exist... can anyone recommend a screen, I don't know much about the mechanical folding ones but I imagine it would have to be manual fold out screen to fit a drive in under it, but it would have to basically be hollow underneath the screen to fit the drive in and just cut out the face below the screen to allow the loading of CD/DVD's. I would probably use one similar to this...

I really like the LiIon feature, would be nice that it wouldn't overdraw power from such a lean system as the VoomPC/Ampie and have the ease of USB to run along with the screen cables. Any input on this? BTW, I'm just learning about all this CarPC stuff and will soon have a 2006 Toyota Prius to install it in. I hope for it to look similar to this:

The biggest problem being that this unit was specially designed to manually swing out farther than most other screens (to clear the dash) making it use up all available space for a slot load optical drive...

sounds like a brilliant idea, that way you don't have to cut up the dash at all.
onlyt hing i'd suggest is not to go for an external enclosure as this will be too big to fit in the lcd (if there;'s room in there in the first place).

With some creative engineering and a little fabrication work, you can squeeze a slim laptop optical drive and it's IDE adapter into a Xenarc 700IDT in-dash unit.
There was a guy here who was interested in developing a product about a year and a half ago. It went nowhere.

What I'd like is a motorized retractable in-dash DVI display with a built-in standalone DVD player. Such a unit would be perfect for me. Give it a video output to send the DVD video to the rear headrest screens, a video input for the rearview camera, maybe a TV tuner if we're feeling frisky and it'll be all good!
What's with all of the VGA displays anyway? My Mac mini has DVI, I'd like to put it to some use!

The DVI part is no problem, just a matter of swapping out the lcd controllers.
Adding the dvd drive too, in a motorized? now you are asking for a lot.

That was me... I couldn't figure out a way to make the screen fold out cleanly... I didn't want to do it one way, but I later figured out that I didn't really have much of an option. I'm still interested in making this, but I don't want to get anyone's hopes up, so don't wait up for me...
My current idea is to put the screen on rails to pop out, then have a fourbar linkage to fold it up or down, depending on your preference - you'd have to pick up or down when you install it, not on-the-fly. If anyone wants to talk about it more, PM me.

No, it wasn't you, unless you used to be Vicci and subsequently registered with a different name.

Any luck?
Did you receive your shipment? This is something I'd be greatly interested in as I have the perfect spot for a half-din touchscreen in the TL. If you market this, I'm sure there'd be plenty of takers from that market!

Yeah, we received the shipment but the products were incomplete, as if the company was asked to produce a part of a screen that is to be assembled somewhere else and are now selling the same part to any company that wants to buy it.
Also, the minimum order is 2000 pieces, just for a mechanical part without front, without the electronics controlling the motors...
We're not going to do it...

Oh well keep on searching guys!
