Transflective LCD diy

Transflective LCD
Nec actually makes theses already for euro market

http://www.eu.necel.com/products/dis...48BC20_14.html

Transflective LCDs
Transflective construction starts with a transmissive LCD and adds a partially reflective mirror layer between the LCD and the backlight. Depending on the LCD manufacturer, the mirror layer can be either a half-silvered mirror or a full mirror with tiny holes punched in it. When a transflective LCD is used indoors, it is illuminated by the backlight just like a transmissive LCD, except that the mirror layer blocks some of the light. When a transflective LCD is used outdoors, ambient light reflects off the mirror layer and illuminates the LCD. Note that outdoors, light has to go through the LCD twice, once on the way in and once on the way out. This tends to makes the outdoor performance of a transflective LCD not as good as the indoor performance, where the light only has to go through the LCD once

how hard would it be to make one our selfs

make a mirror like a half-silvered mirror

All we really need to do is find an oneway mirror or layer place it between the lcd and backlight, find a controller to dimmer the backlight.
this is not impossible, and fof touch

ClearTek II Capacitive Touch Screens
Capacitive touch screen solutions are the clear choice wherever performance demands are high. From kiosks to gaming applications, they're environmentally robust and durable, yet highly sensitive with superb optical clarity.

3M Touch Systems' MicroTouch ClearTek II capacitive touch screens are the preferred touch solution for applications that require fast and accurate touch performance with a sleek design and robust touch characteristics

TouchPen
TouchPen supports both finger touch and pen input on a ClearTek™ sensor. The tethered stylus supports handwriting recognition, signature and data capture, annotation, and gloved-hand use. With TouchPen you can select from dense menus or work with detailed images too small to touch with a finger. A hand resting on the screen while writing is ignored through capacitive digitizer technology, which intelligently distinguishes between pen and finger touch.

This has now been addressed by a company called Trio. This company can modify an existing transmissive LCD by adding a paper-thin film between the LCD's backlight and the front glass. This film reflects light from the one side (outside) and allows light through from the other side (backlight) much like a one-way mirror does. This gives a perfect transflective LCD capable of working in the dark as well as in high-brightness conditions without adding any of the drawbacks from traditional high-brightness LCDs.

Although Trio cannot modify every available LCD due to internal mechanical design constraints, it does have a substantial list of LCDs ranging from 16 cm to 48 cm that they are able to offer the modification for. Centurion Micro Electronics has received some samples of the transflective LCDs from Trio

Mp3car store is now selling transreflective screens. At this point in the game, we need prices, not just the technical end of things. Good research though.

Way to resurrect a two year old thread.
You could at least have added something useful.

So, mp3car only sells an NTSC (composite) trans-reflective screen? Isn't that a huge step back from the clarity of VGA+ screens?
