computer lcd monitor in car

hey all,
im new to this forum & it looks like a place i belong

ok heres what i wanna do in step 1 of a 100 for my car
i have installed a playstation 2 and have hooked it up to my 8" car lcd monitor.
what i want to do is use a 19" computer lcd monitor instead of the 8" car monitor.
this is the monitor i want to use

there are 2 things i dont know how to do
1. constant reliable power supply. input required by monitor is 12v dc 5amp
2. convert VGA input plug to RCA input plug

it will be mainly used by the playstation 2. however once converted to RCA i can use an RCA switch box to plug the pc into it for displaying movies and also the rear cameras.

i live in australia so any parts people have in mind can they be kind enough to make sure i can get them shipped internationally.

First of all a 19" monitor is friggin' huge in a vehicle. I suggest making a template and insure fitment before you commit to a purchase.

Second, you need an adapter. Here is one for US$120: http://www.impactacoustics.com/produ...ite+to+vga1%29

Thirs, as far as power, it realy depends on the monitor. If it has a power brick type of electric cord, you could likely us a regulator for it. If it has just a power cord, then you're going to need an inverter to power it. It all depends ont he power specifications of the monitor.

So tell us your plans for putting a computer in your ride. After all, that's what we're all about here.

How does the quality on those compare to if the screen excepted it naturally?

G'day moit,

In your case, you will have more problem with Signal conversion than Power Conversion. Power conversion is Easy. You throw in power inverter (12V->240VAC) and you can power up the monitor in the car.

You will however, have problems with signal conversion. The PS2 does not output RGBHV (computer type VGA output). Your monitor can only take RGB input. When they say D-Sub, that's what they mean.

It's not a mere change of connector set. You have to use a "scailer" to convert S-Video or Component (YUY color space) into RGBHV format.

If you modded your PS2 to output RGBHV format, then just connector conversion you buy from Jaycar/DSE will do. But I have not heard of single successful on-board conversion case.

Make sure you cover the signal conversion scenario BEFORE you buy the monitor. Else you're gonna go "WTF? Why is it only showing B/W or Green"

What you are trying to do, is lot more involved than hacking out dashboard and implanting big screen. Picture quality of a large fixed pixel displays are EXTREMELY sensitive to how the singals are converted. For 8-9inch screen, the thing's so small it doesn't matter, but when you are talking 20 incher, it's a whole different story.
