Found a UK LCD supplier who has no minimum order
Hi all, found a UK supplier of LCD panels, boards inverters, cables etc.
The don't have a fixed price list, but this is the email I got back from them after an enquiry.
Hero Electronics
We do not have an MOQ normally. We will also sell to the private individual. We do not have a price list, but if you can supply me with more information, i.e..display size and resolution, I will forward a quotation.
Best regards
John Leather

Do you have product price lists for
TFT panels
Driver boards.
Backlight inverters.
Cabling/connectors.
Touch screens and controllers/cables
Do you deal with the public directly.
Do you have a minimum order quantity or Value?
I'm looking for the components needed to build a touch screen tft to provide movie playback and GPS visualisation, and also system control for use with a car PC.
If a minimum quantity or value is required, I may have other interested parties amongst the http://www.mp3car.com forums UK members, because most of the suppliers used or recommended on the board are US or far eastern based, and won't ship to, or within Europe.
This all depends on pricing and quantities.
What do you require to put together LCD panel from parts? These guys look to be able to supply most if not all the parts, just need a definative list of parts to get a quote for.
Might useful for UK builders, maybe even get a discount for UK group buy.

Good move! I'll suggest that someone makes a mp3car europe site with all the details for all the suppliers who will supply to europe - I'm up for it if people would find it useful - sourcing some parts has proved very difficult.

Germany
I've found this company that sells LCD, controllers, etc. in Germany. I've already ordered a SM-VGA03 (the SM-VGA01 it's cheapper 20€) controller from them, it is composed by controller board, inverter, with all cables included. It is going to cost me 250€, it's not the ideal price but, for what it is included it's a OK price

What I've done afterwards is mail back asking if they have any datasheets and stock lists rather than price lists.
And also if they do any pre-assembled kits for 640x480 or 800x600 12'oclock viewable (most people will probably mount lower than the head unit for extra security), 64k colour or nearest, daylight viewable 8" ish TFT's (I said pref Sharp, because a lot of people know about setting them up on the Forum) and also pre-assembled kits for 4 wire serial touch screens in the same size, and what prices would be for them.that should give us an idea of costings.

Wonder if they should to the UK, lets have a look.

Skraggy_uk: If they send to Portugal, they send everywhere.
Well the controller board cost 215€, 250€ is what i'm going to pay with TAX and delivery cost and all that burocratic thing, so, according to OANDA.COM 215€ = 140GBP

Looks like thinsg are moving along now.
So we have potential suppliers for screens.
We have the Eden Epia boards and Cubid cases that have DC-DC PSUs built in and just need a clean regulated feed.
I've been looking at Infra red as an option too. I've ordered an ira (Infra Red Assistant) from Canada, going to be about $25 US plus VAT on import (thank god conputer equipment does have Duty on it), And I seen a rather funky Universal Remote in Asda that has navigation buttons, video control (play etc) buttons, and the usual channel number buttons, plus seperate buttons for what should be seperate devices (DVD TV Video HI-FI etc), now they could be programmed for Dscaler, Your Choice of DVD player, Winamp, etc, and if you used Girder to set things up, you could then set up the usual play etc controls to work differently in each application, while the mouse navi buttons stay as mouse Navi buttons whatever device your using.
Then of course, set up one button as left click, one as left double click, and one as right click. Plus assign the power off button to shut down. All coming together. Add a mini point of sale till keyboard hidden away when not needed. this is the start of something decent.
Add in a Winamp com-port controlled button bar for when you just want MP3s, make it in a fold down din sized panel, with a 4x20 serial LCD (both these using USB converters to a hidden powered hub), so when folded down you have the control panel, with the DVD rom dash mounted behind, and when closed a palin black blanking plate.
What do you think

Not too bad altogether. I shall have to get a quote for the screen and all the bits from them, and from Hero in the UK, and see who works out the best.

Thats not a bad screen, but it's an AV screen. We are looking, if possible for a VGA screen to get better resolutions.
Useful backup plan though.

Wow - I spoke to some other lcd screen people a while back. Microview or something like that - i have the url nocking around somewhere...
Anyway, they wanted well over £250 for a controller plus more for an invertor e.t.c - ouch!
So, that price looks pretty good.

Have had an update back from Hero Elec.
"Hi Carl, although Sharp have 8.4" in both 640x480, and 800x600, I would suggest you go for a 6.4". This size is more popular and will be supported with a new high brightness and wide temp. for automotive application. It will be a drop in replacement for the existing module so development can continue until it becomes available. I can offer the following kit.
LQ64D341 (6.4" VGA, TFT.) £294.00
CXA0214 ( backlight inverter ) £22.70
HEKAB-51021-0500 (inverter power cable ) £1.54
HEAC9511V3 ( VGA interface board ) £129.00
HE420687401 ( data cable ) £14.20
HE410680450 (OSD board + cable ) £19.70
95638 (6.4" resistive touch screen ) £43.71
RES4-EVAL-KIT (SC4 controller,Cables, Driver software and manual ) £167.57
All parts are available from stock.
I have tried to make the kit as close to "plug and play" as was possible.
I have attached the relevant data.
Best regards
John Leather"
How do the prices compare, especially for the datacables and boards?
I've attached a Zip of the Datasheets from Hero, if that is any help too.

I think I'll stick with a composite screen for now - that 6.4" for £70 seems pretty good to me!
Hope it works out though - just gotta wait till my cd player on ebay sells...
