stanford1621 is an unknown quantity at this point
what would drawbacks be to this monitor

http://cgi.ebay.com/14-inch-OVERHEAD...QQcmdZViewItem

My plan would be to disassemble the housing and fiberglass this monitor into the dash, it has a remote to control power etc. should be ready to run on 12v, what kind of inputs do these usually have? and would the resolution be acceptable for a main monitor in a car pc?

Or this one I didn't want to go touchscreen but it looks like a complete kit and the price quite low

Resolution appears to be fine, but there's no VGA input. That will reduce teh quality of your display significantly. It would also require you to have hardware that allowsd you to output video signal to a composite video port.

The second link would require additional parts to get operational with a VGA signal, and would make the low cost of teh bare screen not worth it in my opinion.

huh? come again??

a 70.00 lcd controller and you have a 12.1" ELO/NEC s.a.w. setup. Not worth it???

Ok, maybe I missed the boat, but where else are you going to build or buy that quality for less than 200.00???
Have you seen the specs on that lcd panel?
btw, that seller is a great guy. I have been buying from him for 6+ years. Always has top shelf stuff cheap.

I would have thought that the controller would be a lot more than that.
I stand corrected. That's a damn fine deal, then.

Add a touchscreen overlay, if needed and that's some right fine screenage.

If these are going to be used to show the XP desktop and used for the computer...I'd look elsewhere.

If it's going to be used solely for video playback, it should be fine.
