What is the best 8" LCD touchscreen for viewing text @ 800x600?
I have searched many forums, but I have yet to find a review that addresses my particular concern. Here is the problem:
The largest LCD I can fit in my car is an 8". The one I have now (an Innovatek TM-868) has issues displaying text. At 800x600, entire rows and/or columns of pixels simply do not show up. For example, a row of pixels might be missing along the top of a row of text, and any capital T's in that row will look like lower case L's. It is not that I am getting rows of dead/black pixels, it just seems that the screen is not mapping the output of the graphics card correctly on the screen--skipping rows of pixels. Imagine cutting out a row of pixels on your screen, and then sliding the two halves of the screen together. The resulting image is what I see.
Also, if I use a higher resolution, everything looks weird. If I use a lower resolution I can not see the entire window of my applications--which sucks for GPS software.
If anyone is using an 8" LCD touchscreen and can view text perfect at 800x600 or higher resolution, please let me know what make and model you are using!!!
Thanks,
Anthony

Have you tried setting your resolution to 800x480?
Some of those monitors have "squishing" effects because they are widescreen and the resolution is not a 4:3 standard such as 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, but rather 16:9. Might as well try that before buying a new screen.

Only the standard 4:3 ratio resolutions are available. Also, my screen is now cracked, that is why I am taking the opportunity to buy a better one. It still works as display, but touch screen function gone.
I have seen that many people use the Lilliput 8" screen. If I do not get much feed back here to the contrary, I am going to get one of those.

I've got an 8" lilliput. It's not bad at 800x600, but honestly, I expected a sharper picture, 1024x768 the text is fuzzy, but having nothing to compare it to but larger monitors, I don't know if it's a fair complaint. Of course the TS itself probably doesn't help.

Is the text legible at 800x600, or are rows of pixels not rendering?

It's legible, obviously easier to see larger text than smaller though.
I did have a bit of trouble (I'm using Linux/X.org) at first, it would get the scanning rates wrong and the screen would get goofy, (parts shifted off, or the screen would go nuts until I powered cycled), but tweaking the sync rates fixed it.
Maybe why you are having your current problem?
