I'd like know if anyone had any luck getting iG4 to run under Wine? I've seen some success threads/postings about iG2/iG3 and wine (here and elsewhere), but nothing in regards to iG4. I ran the iG4 setup on Ubuntu 8.04 under Wine and again on WinXP, but the installs seem to differ w/ the Ubuntu/Wine install not functioning properly. It seems like I'm missing something or some script. Hopefully someone has tried this other than me.

Anyway, in the event of iG4 not working in an Ubuntu/Wine environment, is there anything similar to iG (turn-by-turn directions, route recalculation, highway exits, etc.)?

GPS nav in linux is kinda tough.

I tried Iguidance V3 and while it worked in wine, I was not overly impressed.
V4 would not work at all.

I am testing Destinator right now which is pretty good but crashes occasionally. I don't think its run for 60 continuous minutes for me yet.

As for native apps- there are a few but...
My own personal opinion is that Roadnav is the best of the bunch.
The problem with Roadnav is that one way steets don't show up, and very often it sees any lines on the map as roads which cross and can be exited from/entered onto. This can cause problems when you are trying to get on a limited access highway and keep finding overpasses and underpasses. lol

The other nav method I use is Delorme Street Atlas running in a virtual machine: accuracy is top-notch, no crashes but it is just NOT set up well for a small screen. Text entry needs a keyboard and a magnifying glass.

I am hoping for further improvements in Roadnav myself.

Not the same, but PC Navigator 8 from MapFactor works almost perfectly under WINE (event the installer). And the company seem to actively encourage use under Linux and are extremely helpful.

Good to know. I mean, with the money and time invested, I'm sticking with IG for now. The only thing that isn't working right is TTS. It hangs randomly, an Alsa or Wine bug. Hopefully be straightened out soon, everything else works fine now.

The problem with the Holux was at some point in Wine (I *think* .96) they more or less commented out support for an ioctl that was needed in the serial usb driver. So what I did was just get a real PS/2 GPS. I probably would have tried to patch it but I had already cut up my GPS and ordered the new one when I found out that the IOCTL worked in previous versions.

My USB GPS works wiith Wine/PC navigator (tried various versions of wine... all ok). I guess its a holux specific issue or one with IG issue maybe?

I *think* it's IG. If any software is using that IOCTL, it's going to be a problem. For instance, the test app that came with that Holux worked fine under Wine.

Not sure what your GPS is using for a USB RS232 converter.

Just to help here, it's mainly support for the prolific usb to serial adapter that had been cut from wine for some reason. 0.9.54 was the last version to have it in there iirc. I haven't checked newest versions tho. As far as I understand it anyway. I however have no idea if the IOCTL is just for prolific or not... may affect others.

Hi guys, here are my results with iGuidance 4 and WINE:

setup:
eeePc 701SD, running ubuntueee 8.04
GPS: uPOD (atmel chipset USB GPS stick), mapped com1 linked to /dev/ttyACM0

For iGuidance to actually see the GPS I had to recompile the current WINE (1.1.11) with the comm.c file from version 0.9.22 (as discussed elsewhere in this forum.

Graphically the normal and UMPC version work very well, the GPS also. The problems I get are:
1- haven't figured a way to get the sound to work. I tested other WINE apps and the sound come out just fine
2- I don't see any street names on the maps, can someone confirm if this is normal?

Any help with my 2 "problems" would be greatly appreciated!

I finally got iGuidance 4 to work with wine using a USB GPS receiver (old DeLorme unit). I never got it to work before (version 3 or 4) because it would never detect the GPS unit; it was due to a regression in the serial dll used by wine starting with wine 0.9.23, and only affected some USB devices, depending on the feature set of their kernel driver.

The fix for it is modifying a couple of lines of code in dlls/ntdll/serial.c to ignore missing kernel features for certain devices. Please see here: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8783#c46 for the fix. Thanks!
