Linuxm some and nghost on thumbdrive?

Okay the way my pc is mounted in my car it's in a 45 degree angle which isn't good for a typical hard drive. I was thinking about running linux on a thumbdrive with nghost. I've tried damn small linux but it doesn't seem to have too much support for anything it wouldn't let me run ./configure on nghost I forget what the error was. I was wondering if the following is all possible (I'm somewhat new to linux)

1. I want to boot and run off a thumb drive perferably with an embedded os so it doesn't have as many read/writes

2. I want to bypass the login screen (so I wont have to enter a username/password

3. I want nghost to open right after login to the os

I'm sure these are all possible but I'm not sure how to search for them can someone steer me in the right direction?

All of what you want is possible.

what you could do is install ubuntu or linuxice on a flash drive and use this post as a guide to enhance it for ssd/flash operation.

That way, you can use the nghost debian package instead of having to compile it from source.

linuxice automatically logins in and starts nghost and you can configure ubuntu to do the same. If you go with ubuntu, google searches for "ubuntu autologin" and 'Ubuntu autostart applications" would provide relevant results.

Okay I installed ubuntu8 onto my thumb drive and I'm getting the same error it's saying "configure error: C++ complier cannot create executables" any clue how to fix that?

did u just installed directly into ur thumb drive or did you do a specific procedure to thumb drive install? Because you can't just directly install ubuntu into a thumb drive.

Yeah I used their guide to install ubuntu8 onto my thumbdrive. The os runs perfectly I just can't get nGhost installed for some reason.

Call me an idiot but I can not for the love of me get Nghost installed. I've tried on fedora 8 and 9, ubuntu 7 and 8, damn small linux, and a few other vresions. I always seem to run into errors. I was wondering what dependencies are needed to install the program? I've tried installing so many of them but I'm never able to make it past ./configure it always fails. I've also tried a few different pc's.

Any Ideas?

for ubuntu, just use the deb packages. Make sure to install libnghost before nghost or you will get errors. I'd only recommend compiling from source if you like error messages. There are a couple in the #linuxice channel that have gotten it to compile on fedora. You just need to install all the deps.

Okay I just installed linuxIce on my portable harddrive and I can't configure it. I click on Apps->Setup->Ice Configure and it opens a terminal and it goes in the background then a popup comes up and says "Configuring your system Please Wait..." and from there nothing happens I click ok and still nothing. Any idea how I can configure this?

do you have connection to the internet? if not, ice configure may not work properly. You can run it from the terminal apps->utilities->terminal as "iceinstall", it will at least give you an error as it exits.

It says I need logged in as root so I tried sudo iceinstall and it says

"resolving nghost-project.com...failed: Name or service not known.
gpg: no valid OpenPGP data found.

nghost-project.com will resolve if you have an internet connection. Can you install firefox and browse the internet?

sudo apt-get install firefox
