LinuxICE update

When/are you going to post a new beta of LinuxICE. Also what version of the Alsa library are you using and is there a way to do somthing like SerialSwitch or AmpCtrl, ie use the DTR line to turn an amp/relay.

we currently don't have a release date for a new build of LinuxICE. We are starting from scratch (codenamed LinuxICE2) with the latest hardware in mind (atom based hardware, as well as C7 and via Nano's).

I've written code to toggle DTR in the past for Linux. I suppose if it was a feature that a number of people wanted, we could definitely add it as an option.

We are getting pretty close to having the core finished. We'll keep the forums updated as more progress is made.

WOOHOO, I can't wait to try this out with full support for my Atom board. I was originally more interested in this than RR honestly.

is this version going to incorporate the new ubuntu mobile style desktop? well i guess that would be left more up to nghost, but either way, how is that aspect coming along?

On Ubuntu mobile.... I like the netbook launcher idea. nghost2 implements something similar but more along the ipod style, also not as pretty.

Maybe nghost3 is just a media player that can be launched from netbook-launcher? It's worth looking into.

I really like the kinetic scrolling feature of the iphone. It seems very intuitive. I'd really like to investigate doing that for nghost3.

Another idea is to separate the desktop from the media player. Make nghost even more modular in that each component would be a separate app: nghost-desktop, nghost-player, nghost-gps, etc. This idea is hard to get buyoff in the carpc community. Most people are really used to one monolithic app that does everything. The benefit is that the openice project all of the sudden is more appealing to other projects like moblin, ubuntu mobile, etc. It also gives the user more choice... which is a good and bad thing (possible confusion?).

We want to make LinuxICE2 more package centric. This means the distro won't be as slim as it currently is. But it also means you can take normal ubuntu, apt-get install linuxice, and bam!, you've got a carpc configured. This makes it much easier for us to maintain and keep up to date also.

The atom platform is nice. And OpenGL graphics are easily done on it. nGhost3 may not run on your old via c3, but if you upgrade to an atom, or even nvidia's ION platform, you'll be glad you did.

i like the idea of a more modular design scheme. in my opinion it is a better option. i think it would be nice to have linuxICE as the underlying distro, that is configured to be smaller, faster and more precise to the car-pc enviorment, and then have nghost as the central app that manages all the aspects of media, gps, etc. i would envision nghost as nothing more than a backbone that takes modules for musicplayer, videoplayer, gps, handsfreephone, and whatever else. nghost could then organize the modules and present them to the user in an intuitive way that facilitates moving in and out of the modules.

Making LinuxICE modular in this fashion would be a very slick move and would allow for easier troubleshooting and upgrading of individual modules without having to recompile Nghost completely

I know that the handsfreephone is in the works, but I have an idea that might be useful. Since most carputer envirionments are 5.1 and music utilizes 4 speakers, that leaves the center channel unused. My idea is to use the center channel exclusively for BT calls. When someone calls, it only comes through the center speaker. I'm not sure how difficult this would be to arrange for, but it would eliminate a lot of echo.

Another idea that I came up with would be to make the Festival plugin route its output to only the center channel as well. As before, I'm not sure how difficult it would be to implement, but it would certainly make for clearer voices.

And last but not least, give us a mixer and EQ! The two ideas I've stated could be implemented through the mixer. Seems like a good way to keep things organized
