We plan to do a video blog on this tomorrow morning, but here it is 4 days off the press:

Why dosen't navit have a torrent? Downloading the compiled map version is taking 2 hours. grr......!

What works
  • Routing
  • GPS updates
  • OSM maps
  • Speech (OS<3.0)
  • Track logs

I asked the same question about map torrents. The response I got was that because map data changes daily, it doesn't make much sense to create a torrent everyday. I suggested keeping a persistent map image alive for a month so that making a torrent makes sense. Map data isn't likely to change a whole lot in a month anyway.

KaZeR is an unknown quantity at this point
There is a work in progress to allow patching the maps on the fly, but it will need more work.

About maps, you don't need to download the whole planet.bin : you can use http://maps.navit-project.org/download/ to get only the area in which you are interested.
