I agree that we need a Linux forum. I know enough Linux/*nix to get me by. I have been really seriously considering putting Linux in my car lately.

One more user who thinks this is a good idea....
I too only at this point know enough to get by, but after my current install I was playing with the idea of doing a linux install.

I'd like to cast my vote for a *NIX forum. I'd been lurking here for a while before I started posting, and have lamented the lack of more *NIX-specific posts. Would definitely like to see more, and will contribute what I can.
Been running GNU/Linux since '98. Admin, development, hair-pulling, and everything else. Steep learing curve, sure - but now I'll only touch Windoze if I absolutely must. I think if more people could see the benefits of moving away from Microsoft products (and were willing to invest the time and brain power to learn...), they'd be much happier.
Started with Slackware, tried Mandrake, then Debian - and fell in love.

OSX is based on one of the BSDs (which one escapes me).
Linux started out as a Minix clone.
Sure, if you go back far enough, they both have a common ancestry in some ancient UNIX, but to talk about that would be silly.
To whoever is going to decide whether or not there's to be a *NIX forum: Please don't combine mac and *NIX! Productive discussions about the platform are more important than, "Where do I click to do make the music play?"

Hey don't be so quick there... Long time FreeBSD user here! OS X is based pretty much directly on FreeBSD with a Mach kernel.. See http://www.apple.com/macosx/tiger/unix.html for more info... And if a *nix forum was up and running there would be no reason why Mac OS X users couldn't use most of the software we'd be running on *nix.
That said no I don't think they should be combined either.. the Mac users could pop in for a chat and some more advanced advise I'd guess!

You don't _have_ to wait.
<> You can run a 'live' linux straight from your CDRom. Switching == simple reboot w/ or w/o the linux cd
<> Linux can run under MS Virtual PC. You can explore linux w/in a window of your current OS.

So lets talk about GNU/Linux, not who sucks more/less. I apologize.

Hey the more we argue the more *nix people will join in to drum up support for a forum!

I'm not certain how recently you've tried knoppix ('the' popular linux live cd) but you're able to do quite a bit w/o commiting your system to a dual boot/os box.
I've even run knoppix under MS Virtual PC so the start up cost (time, effort) was minimal.
But, it's your world I'm just chuckin' ideas.

Yeah, live cds aren't a good way to learn Linux. They are limited and you can't configure anything. I'd assume you would get frustrated and end up cursing Linux. I would recommend Fedora or Mandrake for a first time Linux user. Gentoo is the ultimate distro for experienced users. If this Linux thing works out I think I may open my player source, we may be able to start collaborating on an open source Linux media player/frontend/gps etc..

Llama,
I can understand your frustration but some well spent time w/ the documentation would clear up this small gap in your understanding of how live linux CDs work. Knoppix facilitates writing of configuration data to the host HD in it's native format.
