Live CDs will give you the look and feel, however versatility is what you need. Especially with all the add ons for mobile AV fans. So in other words a well supported kernel.

As for partition options, I've never been screwed (yet) by Partition Magic. I've also used qtparted and parted without problems. The system rescue CD is a great utility as well. I used to use it to image hard drives. I would suggest PM as long as you've backed up your data.

If you can, I'm with the "just get another drive" croud though too.
