I've had a hard time finding a good overview of how it all fits together. If I do, I'll be sure to pass it on.

OTOH, I've renamed all the modules I didn't want and it had zero effect.

Just to add my 2c...

There's a decent article mentioning cinit (another init alternative) at http://www.linux.com/article.pl?sid=06/04/13/173227.

Also, the artice from IBM that I think started the whole parallel startup processes wave: http://www-128.ibm.com/developerwork...ry/l-boot.html.

And if you want to get to know the inner-workings of a linux system, you might check out Linux From Scratch.

I don't have so much of a problem with the boot process as all the other crap. Most of the installs I've done in the past were minimal server installs all done from source.

Now with these "desktop" type of installs, out of the box, there are a ton of services running and it's not always obvious what they are for. Googling fixes most of it, just takes up more time which has been in pretty short supply as of late.

On an unrelated note. artsd sucks. Nuking that fixed just about all my sound problems and improved inter-process responsiveness of XMMS over 200%. I mean things like loading the playlist remotely as opposed to actually playing music.

But it's a good example of what's confusing about paring down a linux box.
Alsa, oss, artsd, etc. Nice if there were overviews of such subsystems so you could tell what's what and how it relates.
