yeah, we've discussed navit integration a while back, also on the nGhost forum
for now we can start navit as if it were GPSDrive or any other nav system: we just open an external app, but integration would beat it all of course.. could maybe even save us the need for an X server, as SDL can output to framebuffer.
there's garmin and garmin: one part is for rendering and the other for routing, if you just have the first one, there'll be no information inside the file weather there's a junction when roads cross or if it's just a bridge/tunnel.. that's what the nav. part of the format is.. currently the OSM->garmin export doesn't do that.

Some updates..
Now there's a 3D view with tilt (or is it pan?) support!
Roadbook, ETA, altimeter.
The POI (like speedtrap) are almost working, there's only a little bug left regarding their textures.

FYI, i'm currently getting 7~10 fps with Navit on an Athlon XP 2200. I don't "feel" it's lagging with that FPS
I received my EPIA SP 13000 recently, i'm going to try it on it.. And post some results

I haven't bothered trying Navit as I'm in North America. With RoadNav, the display looks like it's inch worming along IIRC. I'll have to go look at it again.

why only 7-10fps? what keeps the screen from updating faster? Also, are there any plans for an integrated keyboard?

Hi.
I think the framerate is dependant of the map data reading. And it's not as efficient as possible in the main branch. It's rewritten in the modular_map branch, but i haven't tested the gui yet with this branch (next thing in my todo list )
But the framerate is really usable for this kind of app. Of course, i wouldn't say the same thing for a game.
About the integrated keyboard, i only forgot to talk about it Since the app is bound to be used on a touchscreen, of course, there is one
Watch it in action :
http://www.kazer.org/navit/navit_full.mpg
Or here :
Also, OpenStreetMap datas can now be used for routing (since yesterday, in the modular_map branch). Along with garmin.
I've posted some screenshots too in my gallery http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/vbim...mages&id=55727
If you have any question, feel free to contact me
[Offtopic] I tried yesterday to register on the nghost forums, but got an error with phpmailing or something like that at the end of my registration. So i didn't get the confirmation link. Can you help? You can PM me.

Hey so can you summarize what data can be used with NavIT? and where to get it? The problem to this date has been with data rather than GPS/routing issues.

Indeed. Data sources is the main concern.
Where to get navit :
There's the main branch, available from cvs. This will work only with datas like Falk's reiseplanner, as stated on the website.
There's the fork with the sdl gui. It's based upon the main branch, so it will need the same datas sources.
And, here comes the modular_map branch. It can use the datas of the two previous, plus garmin, plus openstreet maps. And it keeps growing
I'm currently porting the sdl gui to the modular map.
So basically : if you have falk's reiseplanner, or something compliant, you can use the branch and gui of your liking.
If you have garmin, or want openstreet maps, you need modular_map.
If you have issues getting datas from the CVS, i can roll a tarball and put it somewhere. But since i'm lazy, i'll only do it on request (i believe there's tarballs of navit in the nghost forums. i'll post the link later).
I think the main branch is soon to be deprecated (hence its slow development), because the modular_map branch is starting to reach its goal. I'll let you know

If you could put up a tarball somewhere I'd like to see what I could do with it on a Mac.
As far as these Garmin maps go, do you think I could buy the maps somewhere or do I need to have Garmin unit to get these maps?

You can try this one : http://www.kazer.org/navit/navit_sdl.tgz
I recommande make distclean first, cause it contains a lot of crap yet (hence the cvs not being up to date).
As for the garmin maps, i'm not using it, but i believe you can buy map updates seperately. But you'd better ask an expert
If you're on your way to buy maps, and live in Europe or North Africa, Falk's maps are good and work really well with navit. Plus, they are very cheap (Reiseplaner cost around 30/40€ iirc, and you can found them even cheaper on ebay).
Let me know if you have any question!
Enjoy.

Thanks
I started writing some documentation there : http://navit.wiki.sourceforge.net/
Feel free to use it, comment it, ask for any question you may have.
Enjoy

We made a big step ahead last week.
The sdl branch (with the sdl gui) and the modular_map branch (with shiny new features, like multi-maps driver, and multi-gui capabilities where merged into the main trunk.
So now, you just need to fetch the main branch from cvs :
Code:
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@navit.cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/navit login
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@navit.cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/navit co -P navit
At the password prompt, just press enter.
There's also the wiki : http://navit.wiki.sourceforge.net/
Far from complete, but we work on it too
A release may come soon!
