here's quick comment regarding plans to use espeech vor voice synthesis mentioned on wiki page:

espeech seems to be really hard to be understood, I think FreeTTS pronounces a bit beter (MBROLA voice).

Thanks for your tip, we'll think of that. The good news is that now, even the speech output works as a plugin. So you can choose which voice synthesis software works best for you or your language. There's work to do there, but we're on it

If you want to help with FreeTTS (or any other thing) feel free to contact us (or me directly, as you wish).

ok, after reading this and the wiki, i was curious if the modular_map configuration would allow for North America maps? (garmin or anyother) or what is an eta on N.A. i'd love to give your software a try, but it's hard to test w/o maps for my area

Hi.

Currently, your best luck for maps in US are :
- garmin maps (unencrypted ones)
- iGuidance maps

The Garmin driver is working, but for a particular map currently.
The iGuidance driver work has just begun, so don't expect it to work too soon.

If someone has some c/c++ skills and want to help, please contact us, for example in the IRC channel (irc://irc.freenode.org/navit). You'll find cp15 there, which wrote the others drivers (and the garmin driver) and who will be able to explain you how to do so. This work takes time, and any help is appreciated (you don't need to be a coding gourou for that).

Anyhow, i'll let you know of any progress on theses maps.

wow! IGuidance maps! that would help a lot.
Do you have ANY info about map format for iG?
I'd love to help get things moving, but didn't really try those yet.

Work has just begun on it. The format is close to the one of Reiseplaner.
Any help on that would be appreciated. Maybe drop by on IRC for a chat if you want more explanations about how you could help.

On another hand, i18n was fixed and Polish and Italian was added.
With English, German and French, NavIt now speaks 5 languages

This is going to be awesome if it ever gets N.A. maps, and if it gets ported over to Mac OS... maybe?

Hi all,

I am currently running windoze in the car for simplicity's sake, but would love to move to move to Linux. I have Garmin maps, but I'm not a programmer, so if you guys need a tester, I'm willing. I'm in South Africa and Garmin maps are the main ones available.

it's open source, as long as you can have gtk, it should work, finally mac osx is based on BSD, which works pretty much same way as linux.

I agree with dupa2.

Compiling under MacOS or even under Windows should be doable.

If you need any help about that, feel free to contact me or other members of the project, here or on irc : irc.freenode.net channel #navit

Let us know !
