Well, then you can be fairly sure the motherboard is getting the signal, although I would also make sure that it's not just the "Auto Power-On after power failure" option in the BIOS.

Back to ACPI, does acpid show up as a running process when you do a "ps ax"?

Not sure what you are running (distro-wise) at the moment, but have you tried bumping the acpid logging level to see what's going on?

ELNotto: yes, acpi is indeed running

Shotgunefx: I am running e-live (based off of debian) and no, I haven't tried that -- will do.

However, will that show anything if no events are being registered?

FYI, all my acpid experience has been with laptops, it should show you all the events, I'm thinking that it's getting the event but there is nothing setup to handle the particular event or something else is misconfigured.

Are you running gnome? And if so, have you checked out the setting in gnome-power-manager?

Thanks shotgunefx,

I appreciate the efforts. I don't think I am getting the messages in the first place. What I did to test this out was:

'cat /proc/acpi/events' and then flipped switch -- nothing appeared as output from that command (at least not before the computer power was totally shutoff)

After doing some more googling I came across this:

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Fix_Common_ACPI_Problems

I have noted that this DSDT was indeed compiled with the Microsoft compiler.... Need to investigate further to see if this is indeed my problem.

So,

I followed the instructions on that site to see if I have a buggy DSDT. The answer is a definite YES. I have 2 errors and 10 warnings from trying to recompile it!. Now to decide what I want to do next....

I actually had to start my system from scratch, my HD had lots of errors, so I replaced it with flash disk, works just great.
I started with unstable debian, compiled my kernel, loaded come packages including acpi, and bam! same problem as you had.
What happened is that for some reason I didn't get configuration files for acpid with the package! I had to write the files myself, and it works just fine.

So I suggest to check if you have your files in /etc/acpid. Inside you should have shell script with shutdown procedure. Check for it before you mess up with anything else.
