I've been trolling these forums for years now, and have never posted. I'm ready to try out linux and integrate it to a CarPC I am planning on building. My concern is that I am totally new to the functionality of linux. I have Unbuntu and XGL on bootable CDs that I downloaded, but I really don't know how to use anything in Linux yet.

1) How would I install nGhost onto my computer to try it out

2) Is there any hardware requirements? When I attempted to install XGL on my laptop, it wouldn't work.I don't want to start buying the peices to assemble the PC and then find that a linux OS wont work

to answer your second queston, XGL is pretty much Alpha/Beta technology still. Most distros don't have it in their stable branch and that kind of tells you something. Best bet for XGL will be an nvidia video card with nvidia's binary (read non-GPL) drivers.

its not too difficult in ubuntu. download the latest nghost-sqlite. extract it to somewhere. Run a 'sudo apt-get install libsdl-image1.2 libsdl-ttf2.0-0' in a terminal and you should be good to go. You'll want to edit the settings in the nghost/options.conf file so that it finds your music, movies, and removable/network media. If you want remote access functionality you'll want to install apache and php.

If you want to wait (and you probably don't), Linux ICE will have its second alpha build available soon which will start nghost by default.

I am using Mepis linux (just started playing with it last week) and after about 12 hours of getting my touch screen working and calibrated I was able to give nGhost a shot. I really like it. My only issue is I can't see text in the playlists, aside from the audio cd track list. I just saw somewhere that you have a fonts.conf file so i need to take a look at that, but other than that, it's really cool. I really like the skinning capabilities and can't wait for the next release! I am going to try to do a skin and if it turns out the way i want it to I'll email it to you. I really like euby's artwork, he is very talented!

hi reflect, thanks for the interest in the nGhost project.
Are you using an SVN snapshot?
kev is currently in a transitional phase towards a more skinnable nGhost, why there have been some graphical glitches, while I'm working on parsing the actual skin XML files which eubey does from the skin editor he's creating..
enjoy yourself on the euby software (hehe sounds like UbiSoft) editor to create your skin, you'll also be able to give him a nice feedback -> on the nghost forum please.
it's a bit too early to say when this dramatically improved version will be released except from "when it's ready" but as soon as kev has completed his part (won't take much longer) at least svn versions will be usable again. we did release a bit early last time, which is why we'll probably testing this release a bit more
at least it'll be worth waiting for!
