A few quick questions

Hi, I'm new to this forum, but I've been using different linux distros for the past 2-3 years. I've got a few questions about openICE.
I'm thinking about using a cheaper, lower power pico itx pc system. I'm wondering what kind of system requirements the openICE *conglomeration? amalgamation? cluster****?* uses.
Also are all the dependencies in place to install openICE over xbuntu?
Lastly, is there any way to get OBD support in ICE?
Thanks very much for any help.

I've run LinuxICE on the pico before with 512mb ram. It ran really well. You can also install nghost, icepanel and the other OpenICE components on top of xUbuntu. add the LinuxICE repo, and apt get install linuxice should get you just about everything.

there is a packaged version of obdgpslogger for OBD-II. Did you mean OBD-I? that's a bit more tricky, but *logger supports it.

cheers,

Kev,

If you want to run nghost as an application on top of another wm, how do you go about starting it? It seems to require nscan, icepanel, and nghost to operate properly. But if you start them as applications (each one seperately) they don't seem to match up properly.... ie: icepanel won't interact with nghost.

Also, is there a tweeked version of an OSD for navit? If so could you post a pic?

nscan and icepanel are server apps that nghost connects to. So those have to be started before nghost does. nGhost does need nscan *if* and only if you need to update your music collection. Otherwise, nGhost will complain that it couldn't hook up and carry on it's business. The same goes with icepanel, the difference in this case, is that nGhost relies on icepanel for nothing. We built all the icepanel controls (except window-manager functions) inside of nGhost so users wouldn't have to use icepanel if they didn't want.

Version 3 of icepanel doesn't require any sort of special start sequence, instead talks to nGhost over DBus. It's still in development and probably won't be rolled out until LinuxICE3. You are welcome to try it though. It will require a few tweaks to get it running...

I'll try to get a sshot of navit's OSD skin. It basically looks like this only slightly modified:

Navit has undergone a LOT of work recently, however the windows distribution still sucks you have to run it under linux to get any of the new awesome features.

Thanks Kev000,

I noted the behavior between nghost and nscan as you stated.... However, with nghost running by itself -- I didn't find a way to return to the top level menu. ie: If I press the 'Music' button I have no way to get back and select the 'GPS' button.

There's no 'back' button on the lower left corner of the screen? Are you using the skin from the src or the LinuxICE package?

WOW! I'm running Linux on 4 of my 5 computers, finally getting closer to Linux in my car! Only a few more things to see in LinuxICE and I'm there.

When I start nghost by itself I get the standard page with the 6 buttons... Selecting any one of these buttons puts you into the appropriate function, however, there is no way to get back to the starting screen. For music, there is no way to get to the *player* screen. Instead you are stuck at the music selection screen. So just to be clear... Is icepanel necessary to move around the different sections? If so what is the appropriate way to start it up?

Thanks

if you are using the nghost from the linuxice repo, yes, icepanel is required for navigating around.

the skin for nghost in linuxice has been tweaked to utilize icepanel. If you open up /usr/share/nghost/vistique/skin.xml and uncommend the panel, you should have those basic functions back in nghost.
