LinuxICE2 9s boot! Faster than XP, Win7. [With Video]

So I thought I'd run a few benchmarks on the new Atom330 system I put together. First on a regular 7200k 160GB hdd and then a 30Gig SSD. Here are the results:

Atom330, 1GB RAM.
Software: LinuxICE2 Beta2 Full install, stock Ubuntu Kernel.
File System: Ext4

HDD: WD1600BEKT Western Digital 160GB
Boot time: 14s

SSD: OCZ Agility 30GB
Boot time: 9s

NOTE: this was a cold boot, from the start of the bootloader to login. Add about 1s for the display to load and your playing nGhost styles .
Windows

Attached below are the bootcharts. As you can see there is room for improvement. I plan on upgrading to 9.10 later next week and trying NilFS. I expect sub 7s boots at that point. I'll also get some hibernate resume benchmarks.

LinuxICE2 Beta2 (based on ubuntu 9.04)

After the upgrade to 9.10:

LinuxICE2 Beta2 Karmic
You need to upgrade your Flash Player

Notes:
full boot (from POST to nGhost):
~29s
~23s

There's a lot of improvements in the kernel in later versions. I may try to build a custom one just for the Atom and throw it in the repo for others to use. I'm sure 5s boots are possible just like moblin on a specific platform.

Of the 9s boot? Sure. I actually recorded the 14s. I'll record the SSD boot and post when I get home.

How were you able to embed your YouTube Vid? I tried embedding a VIMEO using the VIMEO button and it didn't work.

I just pasted the URL. I'm pretty sure this forum has a youtube plugin of sorts.

Update:

Wow! The boot is dramatically faster after the upgrade to 9.10. The upgrade went relatively smooth. Autologin broke, but that was an easy copy and past from one file to another to re-enable it.

If you do the math: 29(POST->nghost) - 9(kernel->login) = 20s. 23(POST->nghost on 9.10) - 20 (POST+display) = 3seconds from kernel to login?

That's insane!

3second boot!

I don't know if that was quite 9 seconds from post but still pretty impressive!

I don't think i ever said 9s from POST. I did specify:
Quote:
NOTE: this was a cold boot, from the start of the bootloader to login.

The time your BIOS takes depends on the configuration. I'm told that i can reduce that time by not auto-detecting things at POST.

To illustrate where the 9seconds comes from, here's the actuall boot process of linuxICE:

POST
Bootloader
Kernel loads into memory
Init
Login
Graphical start
nGhost, icepanel, etc

POST takes about 10-12seconds,
Bootloader takes maybe 1s
Kernel -> Login takes 9s
Graphical Start takes 2-3s
nGhost and everything else < 1s.

Total = ~27s

After upgrading to 9.10, Kernel -> Login is about 3-5 seconds. Which would bring the total to 23 seconds.

Shaving off 5-6s from the bios would put the total boot time at 17-18s, which is what most people get in windows using hibernate.

The cool thing is, is LinuxICE is this fast without any tweaking like you'd have to do with windows to get it close to this fast. It loads to a full OS with all drivers loaded, wifi, networking etc.

A 30 second video of a 25+ second boot which is supposedly a 9 second boot.

shhh!

The bootchart doesn't lie: the OS alone booted in 9s.

Really, the more eyes I can get on LinuxICE at this point the better. I'm really excited about the progress it has made in the next release. It's becoming quite stable.

LinuxICE addresses some major concerns that we in the forums try to solve fast booting/fast resume being one major one for a lot of people.

Last update: after messing a bit in the BIOS, i timed the 9.10 based LinuxICE as 16.08s from POST. Not bad.
