iPhone as Carputer?

Granted, it's not as modifiable as any other option, BUT it should have Google Maps, MP3 player, iPod-video player, and WiFi on it.

If I don't use it for phone purposes (i.e. maybe avoid an AT&T contract?), what are your thoughts on this being a semi-functional "carputer?" For $500 (ish) it sounds reasonable, no?

1) You can't get it (at least initially) without a contract.
2) Google Maps (I assume) will be essentially useless on it without a WiFi or mobile connection (e.g. have to have a contract for the most effect).
3) Much too small to use while driving.
4) Using it while driving will get you pulled over in some places if not an actual ticket (laws about cell phones without a hands free kit).
5) At $500 (for the 4GB model) you are paying roughly half the cost of installing a Mini, but you are getting far less than half the functionality (more HDD space, ability to customize, usable size screen, etc..).

Those are my thoughts anyway.

Yeah, that all makes sense. I thought it might be a decent alternative to a messy install and the screen is right there in with the unit, so don't have to figure out what works and what doesn't.

Thanks for the counterpoints, Dave.
