Say it ain't so (no more Minis?)

http://www.macrumors.com/2007/05/24/...e-discontinued

I've been wondering about it's lack of upgrades, but I hope it just another case of the 10.5 and iPhone sucking up all the resources.

Your telling me I was already putting money aside for an updated mini. PS I ordered my PIE connectors yesterday, so I should have them by Tuesday at the latest... I really hope they squeeze out one more update...

I think it is pretty unlikely they discontinue it without some appropriate replacement. Maybe they replace it with something even better for in-car use?

I not so sure it's unlikely. Apple only made the Mini to satisfy the investors desire to compete with Dell on the "cheap" PCs. Jobs never really wanted to do it as he knew that Dell was just using smoke and mirrors to make people think there is value in the cheap PCs they sell (it's just an up sell tactic).

The Mini has a passionate fan base (I don't know anyone that has one and doesn't love it), but it's too small to be a major consideration without other factors (investors/board) driving it

If it does indeed go away, I hope they come out with a cross between the iMac and Mac Pro (e.g. no built in LCD and expandable). But i'm not holding my breath there.

It's true it's a rumor, but given Jobs' original feelings when it was released and that it hasn't really been updated since it switched to Intel I think it has more weight than the typical "The iPhone will be able to run your entire life while curing cancer while you sleep" type rumors.

If it's true, I see some cheap Mini's in my future

This is the Mac community, DP. We can actually live on rumors for and indefinate period of time if no food is available. I heard about these guys who got stranded in the Alps after a plane crash and they lived on iPhone rumors for over 2 months before they were rescued...

As for the Mini going away, well, that would be kind of a deal for the Mac car community because that's the best and cheapest unit for the car. It's not like some other company will make one. So...that's a deal for us.

On the other hand, if they quit making it and don't have a suitable replacement, I can always fire up the trusty Epia M10000 and do a re-install, so its not the end of the world.

I'm not so sure they're going to kill off the Mini, though. It's a great entry level device and it is TINY. Keyboard, mouse, screen, Mini, boom! you're on a Mac. It's sort of the essence of a stripped down computing experience rather than some ponderous tower unit. And it's CHEAP.

Unless they aren't moving any units, I don't see why they'd discontinue it. It doesn't compete with any of their other products.

You could always get one of these and run MacOS on it...

I love the Mini, but I don't see the big deal if they kill it. If you're building a business making products for the Mini and are counting on their continued sales and growth of the market I can see why you'd be concerned. If you're just putting one or two in a car then there's always this cool website.

They won't kill the Mini. Its their main platform to get Windows users over to their platform. They are probably quiet since Intel will be upgrading their chipset in the next quarter.
