Mac mini (Intel) and CNX-P2140

Hi,

one year without an CarMac was enough and now I have installed a Mac again in my car. It's now an Intel Mac mini (Core Duo 1,67 GHz) powered by an Carnetix P2140 PSU (Firmware 1.8.3) and connected to an Indash-Display. All is working fine... exept... the sleep/hibernate. I want to use the Mac mini in the mixed Sleep/Hibernate-Mode. That means the Mac mini stays powered for 4 hours and sleeps. After 4 hours the power will be cutted (Dead Men Timer) by the PSU and the Mac mini should fall in Hibernation. The hibernation settings are okay, because it works with the original 220V power supply. But if the Mac mini ist connected to the P2140, the Mac mini doesn't hibernate. It looses power and after switching power on, it boots from the beginning. :-(

Does anyone have an Intel Mac mini running successfully with sleep and/or hibernation? If yes, how's your setup (wiring, config of Mac & PSU)? Thanks.

Hi ATL - I have the same setup as you and the same problem. You need to switch the PSU soft jumpers into "Standby" mode not "Hiberate". Unfortunately it is impossible to get the P2140 to stay in "Hibernate" mode using the current software/firmware.

I've posted on the Carnetix forum about this problem but MikeH, who is normally pretty responsive, hasn't answered this one since I posted it sometime ago. I wonder whether it's a firmware problem?

Yes I know. The jumpers are set to "standby". For the first, I have downgraded to the old firmware version 1.4.4. I will see, if it works now.

By the way, the Carnetix hardware is good, but the documentation is poor. I hope, they will work on the documentation.

Just for information: The CNX-P2140 works as expected with the Firmware 1.44 for a few days now. The Mac mini goes to sleep if the Ignition is turned off. The PSU is also configured for SLEEP. After 4 hours the power to the PSU will be cutted via an external time relay until the ignition is turned on again.

Unhappy Newbie with same problems.

I am a newbie to any electrical/electronics stuff, but am trying to get a bit adventurous. I have just bought a Mac Mini (intel) and a P2140 and trying to set it up in my car.

I am trying to achieve:
1. Mac should start when the ignition is turned on.
2. Mac should goto sleep mode when the ignition is turned off.
3. Mac should hybernate after 24 hours.

Right now, I am not using the P2140 to power the monitor, but later I plan to do that.

I have a couple of questions, actually more than a couple.
1. Do I need to downgrade the firmware of P2140
2. Can you tell me the exact jumper settings for the P2140
3. "After 4 hours the power to the PSU will be cutted via an external time relay" What does via an external time relay refer to?

Thanks,
Inferno

The P-2140 does all this, although you will need to hook it up via USB to a Windows XP machine to configure it. OSX doesn't hybernate by default. You'll need to research Safe-sleep to get that going. Unless you're running boot-camp with WinXP.

No

Set JP1 to Pins 2 and 3.
Set JP5 to Pins 2 and 3 on the left jumper, 1 and 2 on the right jumper.

JP 2 and 4 are for secondary power. You'd want to set it to 12v when you hook up your monitor.

The user manual is located here:

You can set the deadman timer on the P-2140 to kill power any specified amount of time.

1. This is the default.
2. Set the "Shutdown mode" to "Standby" in the jumper settings of the PSUmoni software.
3. (Normally) set the DMT (Dead Men Timer) to 24 hours, to cut the Power. You have configure the Safe-Sleep mode on the Mac mini. This can be done with the Preference Panel "Hibernate".

1. This depends, if it works and of the installed version. For me the software version 1.8.x don't work, because I think the Sleep mode ist buggy there.
2. The hardware settings are listed in the post from Machinehead. For the jumper settings in the PSUmoni software I have used the following settings:
But you have to set the Shutdown Mode to "Sleep".
3. I do this via an external time relay because the DMT has bugs in the PSU software < 1.8.x. But if it works for you with the installed software version, there is no need to downgrade the software or use an external time relay.

I have a second reason for using the older software: The option "Secondary output" follows "Primary output" doesn't exist anymore in the newer software versions.

There are some options I'd like see them implement in the next version of the fireware. The main one would be a toggle to have the PSU fan run during sleept mode at a user determined temperature setting. I've had my P2140 over heat more than once so far this summer. I ended up putting my own secondary fan on it.

Pictures?

I have a 1996 Audi A4 and I've been trying to determine if I can install one of my Mac minis in my car.

Do you think you could explain where/how you've installed the mini and the display?

Thanks in advance,

Jeff

I installed the mini inside my center console. I build a acrylic box to hold it in place. Here's a picture:

I installed the PSU under the driver seats and the monitor goes in my dash were the stock head unit used to be. Which looks like this:

All the wires are under carpet or inside the center console.
