Port Mapping....!!!

Right guys....

I'm on a mission, i have an internet connection in my car, and i am looking to do something a bit different, not too sure how it will work, but looking for some advice...!

I am going to run http://www.securityspy.com/ in the car, but i don't understand port mapping...

I am going to set it up on my home network 1st on an iMac...

I run through a BT Home Hub which is connected to an apple extreme and then wireless into the home network. I have got as far as i can do this on the home network between machines, but don't understand the mapping to be able to view over the net...!!!

If i can get this set up at home, then i will run this in the car, so people will be able to view the camera(s) from the car on any mac and see what i see, just a gimmick for some, but it will have 2 cameras, 1 forward facing and 1 into the car itself...

Any help would be appreciated..

The feature you are looking for is also called NAT or address translation. Basically what you need is to tell the router to take incoming connections on its public interface and a certain port and forward it to certain address and port on the internal network.

I got that far, but i don't know how to do it... lol

been reading up on it, but i am still a bit confused.

Typically there is a page for it in the Advanced settings for the router. On my SMC, it's a simple form that lets you specify the port as well as the target IP address (I believe some will let you map to a different port too, e.g. port 22 ->192.168.2.100:9999).

Who makes your router? IE, (interweb)--->(your cablemodem/dsl modem)-->(your router)--->all the computers on your network. Basically you have to set port 8000 (the default for security spy) to be forwarded to what ever the ip address is on the machine you have it installed on.

The modem/router is a BT Home Hub (which is disabled for wireless and used as a modem by ethernet to the Apple Extreme router, which IS wireless and has an iMac connected to it and that has the cameras...!

Any machine on the home network can see the cameras using http://192.168.1.274/8000 which is the ip address of the machine they are connected to i assume...

So now i need to work out the rest...

Does that explain it a bit better from my end...?

In your router, in port mapping/forwarding, tell it to forward all requests on port 8000 to 192.168.1.274.

Now to see the camera's remotely load up http://yourexternalIP:8000

So if your external IP address was 127.0.0.1 it would be http://127.0.0.1:8000
