WinXP in Parallels while running iGuidance 3/4 is BlueScreening

I am going crazy here... I just got done formatting my mac mini completely - reinstalled OSX with all updates... installed the latest version of parallels and a fresh copy of win xp pro with all the updates.

I did this because when I am running iGuidance with my BU-353 I get random driver bluescreens... they could be 5 min apart they could be 30 min... but it consistently happens and I am suspecting that the driver for the BU-353 is the problem... I have the most recent driver... and have tried to reinstall it.

Anyone eles having a crazy time with blue screens and this type of setup! Driving me crazy - I feel like I am outta options here. maybe my setting for parallels is wrong.

No experience myself, but it might be Parallels itself. I've heard a lot of complaints of it having issues with USB devices (especially if you sleep/wake the Mac). You might bring it up to the Parallels support and see if they might have any info.

I woudln't expect that you're going to get a lot of help with this one, as most people aren't runing XP under Paralells.

I don't know about that. My company still hasn't changed their PC image to Vista and the Parallels image they give us (if we want it) is XP.

What he really needs to do (though it is painful) to narrow it down is install XP via bootcamp and see if the issue persists that way or not. If so, it's a driver problem. If not, it's a Parallels issue and they should help him as XP is still a very much supported OS.

Let me clarify...

Not many people with PCs in their vehicles are running WinXP under Parallels.

I don't mind using boot camp to just run XP on my mac... but my main reason I like running os x is to have a remote for front row... it is so much easier to use for a front end... is there any support for using the IR remote that came with my mini in windows...

please let me know what your thoughts are.

I wasn't suggesting it as a perm fix, just to help you get a better idea if it is a windows/driver issue or parallels/usb issue so you can complain to the right place

Actually, I suspect most people running Parallels in their car are running XP. As they are running parallels probably to run a PC based navigation program such as iGuidance why on earth install Vista?

Using Parallels & XP seems to be a common way for mac CarPC users to get a decent navigation solution. Thankfully iGuidance doesn't check for Parallels on install (it does check for VMware).

I used this summer holliday paralels with Directions. It worked for a week, until Windows crashed. And offcourse i had no windows install disks with me. And i had to drive two weeks without navigation. When i came home, i got the Mac out of the car and bought a TomTom 720T Good for navigation and MP3 files (and if you want a telepfone carkit) It works very good. Before i even think of getting the Mac back in the car, there has to be a good, stabile, usable osx native navigation program.

I have a mac mini 1.66 2g ram. Im running Parallels V3.0 (Win XP) with the BU-353 and Iguidance V4.0. I am seeing no problems as of today. I took a 120 mile trip with it too.

The only issue with bluescreens I've had with both Parallels and VMWare was when I ran Xport3 to split the GPS port. Other than that IGuidance 4 runs like a champ for me in VMWare.

And yes I found a way around the activation issue with IGuidance 4 in VMWare. (It's not entirely a legal solution either)
