RE-Installation of MAC MINI in a 1998 Civic Si (pics incl)

Ok folks...well...I guess installing a mac is always a work in progress. I was unhappy with my first install, (see pics two threads down). SO I went back to the drawing board and re-designed everything. People on here were correct, it is not the wiring that is difficult but it is the hardware posititioning that is hard.

As you can see, the screen is an in-dash xenarc manual flip 700IDT (Full review coming in a few weeks)

The mac..was originally situated on a leather tray directly under the heating control. You can see the cut-out in the dash that were made for it. I priced out that part from honda and it is $48cnd....so a replacement is coming soon. I removed the stereo deck from the bottom (where the old tape deck was) and thats where I put he mac. It is actually sitting on a sliding tray (no wheels), just aluminum rails. You can see a black lip that i connected for a handle. It works like a charm, and there is no movement at all. Just above it, you'll see the dash is cut (about 2 inches in width) that was made for my originial install with the tray. I'm gonna keep that cut-away space and use it to place a usb and FW400 cable.

The mini tucks away nicely and extends outward as well. Best of all it is hollow underneath it. The stereo deck is now in my dash (upside down - it won't fit any other way).

MY ONLY problem is the wiring...there is just so much of it, and i'm not sure how to secure it. Right now it's near the passenger seat by the feat..i'm afraid of water hitting the wires in the winter. Anyhow, here are the pics

I'll post more images later on today

Rather nicely planned, but the cutting could be a bit cleaner ;-) What is the reason for the missing part of the dashboard above the computer?

Jirka,

I thought I had explained. originally I had placed the mac where the cut-out was. I found it was just crappy and VERY visible to the peering eyes. SO I then placed it to where it is now. I'll be ordering some new parts from honda. When the new dash components come in, you won't see any of the 'cut' parts. That's just temporary.

Download a free app called Temperatur Monitor (no time to find the link, you'll have to
Google it) and run it to track your temps. You'll get a good picture of how hot the Mini gets in that enclosure.

Yes, that is no problem - but does anyone know what the "safe" temperature ranges are? I have a PPC mini, that only has one temperature sensor on the HDD. The maximum temperature I have seen was 61°C (ca 142°F).

Dunno what is 'safe'. I'm in the same boat you are. I run nominally in the 130 degree range on the HDD and haven't had any issues. It will run for lengthy periods of time at that temp.

for temps, maybe we should start a poll, so we know what the mean average is. this could also be made a sticky.

Well, I have istat Pro and another program called Sam Control. I am averaging temps around 50 degrees celcius. Although it looks tight in there..the bottom is hollow and has empty space. My only concern is the bottom heat vent. I may follow your lead "Bugbyte" and extend the vent so it is clear of the mini. I'll see how things go. I've also cleared up all those wires you se in the pic today, so it is looking even better
