Apple Remote and USB reciever

Does anyone know if there are any USB IR recievers that will work with the apple remote and front row? Has anyone tried this in their cars? Will other remotes work?

I assume that the mac mini is out of reach of the IR remote?

I suppose you could just install an IR remote extender such as these:

I wonder if one could run a fiber optic cable from the dash to the ir receiver in the mini?

You can extend the IR led by just de-soldering the LED from the Remotes board and soldering in a length of small gauge wire/cable. I used some old speaker cable.

Not sure if the griffin remote can operate front row.

This option isn't completely out of the question, but I'd really like to be able to continue to use the Apple remote wirelessly unaltered.

Anyone know anything about the fiber optic cable idea???

Edit: I just tried to use an optical audio cable so carry the Ir signal, and it works ok. It looks like if i could butt the cable up to the sensor on the macmini, i could have the remote up to about a foot away from the other end to work. not perfect, but doesn't involve cutting up the mini, or losing the wireless remote. Might try to get a larger guage of fiber optic cord to try and improve this.

Even better, check out Remote Buddy here:

http://www.iospirit.com/index.php?mo...e=infogroup-23

Using this you can control the mac mini using a wiiremote via bluetooth!

edit: If you hack in a wii sensor bar to your screen/dash (or 2 IR emitters either side of the screen) it will also act as a mouse/pointer. Cool!
