Mini Fan Control (XP)

I've been checking the mac forums and they don't have a real solution to this problem.

The fan in my mac mini will not run under XP. I installed a fan control thing in OSX that works great in OSX, and will even crank the fan speed up when you restart into XP, but this only works for the first time. If I restart XP again or hibernate of anything, the fan shuts off again.

My mini has been crashing and restarting (I was thinking it was a hardware issue, but I'm not too sure) so I think it could be the lack of fan.

Have any mini users found a REAL solution to this?

Speedfan is a program that can take control of fans on normal PC motherboards, it may do the same on a Intel Mini.

I tried speedfan. Problem is it doesn't work on the mini (at least not mine). It tells me that there are no fans hooked up.

Well, I dont think the crashing is caused by heat since I left it sit for a few hours and cranked up the temp, and its been running fine.

I don't know... I never had this problem. I've left my Mini running for several days without any issues. You use Boot Camp, I assume? Then shouldn't that CD you had to write when you first set up Windows have some sort of app to control the fan speed? Or maybe your fan's broken? Or perhaps, if you've ever opened your Mini, you unplugged the fan connector (the little wire in the front), and forgot to plug it in again?

Its a common problem for all macs. There are no drivers that control mac fans in windows, whether it be a mini or a macbook. they only solution people have is loading OSX first, then restarting into XP to keep the fan going.

Its not a problem that is specific to my Mac Mini

The Mini will look after itself. By default, it will prefer to run hot and quiet vs. cooler and loud. If it gets hot enough to be worried, regardless of whether it's running Windows or MacOS, it will crank up the fan.

It's not necessary to adjust the fan speed; the Mini knows what it's doing.

LOL i like that description. Live in central Cali never had any problems, car gets up past 130 in summer and ran just fine.

well i have come up with a solution...it works but a bit agracultural....bit fiddly but temps are now perfect.
i bypassed the fan controls etc and directly connected the fan to 5 volts, fan runs very quiet and always runs. you need to be adventurous to do this but works great. there is 5 volts and gnd on the ir receiver board(i recommend using a multi meter to find them but they are the outer spots. i disconnected the fan from the riser that conects the hdd and cdrom and soldered the outer wires of the fan cable to those points on the ir assembly. unfortunately the cables are black but cross wiring isnt a major issue, if it dont run just swap them over. when it runs the core temps hover around 36 to 40 temps under speed fan(used to monitor temps)...now the little beasty dont shut down
