Runnin' an equalizer with a mini

All this time I have been thinking (years now) about a mac in my car, and the problems associated with taking a line-out, USB or firewire audio solution.

The problems arise when you DO NOT have a head unit anymore, and you DO want the ability to fade F/R as well as have more control over your audio...like how the old head unit was that Id be replacing.

Griffin Firewave? Out. Look no further, you dont want this.
MAudio things? In. If you got the cash, go for it, super.
Edirol USB? In. If you want quick n easy, this is it. Grab a bunch RCA splitters though.

Why didnt I think of using an off the shelf eqalizer like the Clarion EQS746?

Has everything I need. And its 7v preouts? Damn!

But, the question I have now is...how the hell do you turn it on and off? Without a remote-on wire coming from a head unit, what tells this thing to turn on and off?

Keep in mind I will be using a Mac Mini with a P2140.

The P2140 has a remote-on wire. Look over the instruction manual, it's called the DYLON "Remote Trigger". And it's a the blue wire on the output side of the P2140.

One nice feature, you can delay the amp turn on. Handy if there's any thump noise on bootup.

Holy shnickes.

So, why hasnt an EQ been more talked about as a solution for a mac in the car?

I see so many people keeping their HU, which I thought was the opposite of putting a carputer...

I really don't know the answer, other than keeping the HU is cheaper than installing amplifiers. I struggled for quite a while trying to come up with a solution that would give me the sound quality that I desired and would function with a mac.

Ultimately I got a great deal on a M-Audio Firewire 410.

By the way, the high-end sound guys love this bad boy: http://www.alpine-usa.com/US-en/prod...model=PXA-H701

It's a little pricey and requires a controller unit.

I have always had an amp in my car. I got an RF 600.5 which brought me down to a single amp where I used to run 2-3.

I love the idea of the 410, but its pricetag vs the customization and ease of use of an EQ, and Im completely sold.

Im going to post another thread just to bring it out more than inside this one, but if you REALLY want a Griffin Firewave, they are being discontinued and are 80% off!!!

I have a Firewave as well, it's collecting dust in a drawer somewhere.
