ITouch question

Can you hook up an Itouch to an external monitor like we use in our cars with touchscreen?
If so that may eliminate my carputer. I can use music and use the car monitor as a touch screen. That would be freaking sweeet.

Her is an article on what they can do so far:
http://arstechnica.com/journals/appl...v-out-features

You will see that its dependent on apps that are not currently available and it's very limited. They are using un-documented api's from a not-yet-released update, which may be a hint that apple might do what your looking for in a future update.

Wonder if anyone has figured this out yet, then can port the touch screen software to work on the itouch. Then I can use that as my "carputer" mainly for music and such.

I'm working on the same thing at this thread.

There are two options for video output, described here and in a video I did.

Currently, I have a bluetooth touchscreen for an EEPC that I will try to experiment with, but I don't know if that will work or not.

I just got done watching your videos and skimming your thread.
So the only way to control the itouch/phone from an external monitor is with the help of a pc?
Can't you take the touchscreen program and port it over to java to work on the itouch?

No, not as far as I can tell. To get rid of the computer requirement, you need a driver for the touchscreen to run on the iPhone AND you need a serial port connection to the iPhone. Even if you had that, you'd have to figure out how to make the touchscreen driver substitute for or mirror the iPhone's touchscreen.

It's not beyond the realm of possibility, but I'm not real sure how to make it happen.

Instead, I think the 3.0 SDK will make it possible to control the iPhone via Bluetooth using the keyboard and probably via touchscreen. I'm going to see what comes of that when they release it.

the only hope i can see for the future of this type of project is in the new iphone 3.0 API. it lets you interface the port on the iphone/touch and thus someone theoretically could build a touchscreen that supports the iphone. that touchscreen instead of a usb input it would have an iphone plug with an accompanying app that would allow for the control of the phone from the screen. even with this api this type of app would most likely still have to be a jailbreak option since the app would have to run in the background. The crux of it all is that apple is at least giving developers access to control hardware, so it will open a lot of doors to us here.

Just something to think about, isn't there an advertisemnet of a game on a touch or iphone with the video on a tv or monitor? Same idea, right?

Yes. On a jailbroken iPod Touch or iPhone, you can use either screenspltr or TVout to display the video on the screen.

See my iPhone thread for a video of how that works.

I was thinking about this:

http://www.macrumors.com/2008/12/05/...o-chaser-demo/

You would still use the touch/iphone for control but video would also be on another screen.

Right, that is the best of both worlds. I have the AV cable and when you play a video on the iPod, you get the video on the TV and you get a control screen on the iPod. That's the best way to do it IMHO.

Put a couple of control buttons on the iPod screen and the results on the video out.

I really don't know if that is possible on this generation of iPods/iPhones, but it certainly is possible on some of the netbooks or Windows phones.
