What aboot ODBII?

Has anyone looked into someone porting a ScanTool like program to mac? Or is anyone going to put it into their front end?

Personally I think having live updating ODBII data is kinda 50% the point of having a carputer, otherwise you have a car and a computer and not two intwined lovers, as it may.

Friend of mine was gonna write a serial/usb controller for an ODBII card but he got a job and put it on the shelf....

I have been running OBDII software on my iBook, usng Virtual PC, for about 8 months now. It works. In Virtual PC, and running a Belkin USB adapter for a serial connection, it runs fine while datalogging individual runs at the track. It won't handle long distance logging, because VPC coughs.

Perhaps in this case Linux/Unix is our friend? How about some of the folks on the Linux forum? What are they using/planning? If we can get a Linux version, porting it to the Mac would be much easier.

Any Linux readers on the Mac forum care to weigh in?

First of all. I am not a programmer.....

That said, I have been looking at the Tiger Widget developer manual. In it talks about calling command line programs. So for the programmers out there.

What about using the linux command line app:

It looks like you could compile it for Mac.

You could build a gui on top of that with the widget stuff.

Like I said, I am not a programmer, but thought I would throw that out there.

I wasn't able to compile it right off the bat (configure, make...

), but that doesn't mean it can't be done. I'll probably try from the cvs later tonight. Probably help if i wasn't so lazy today

that's something i've been working on the past couple of weeks.

watch out compiling freediag under Tiger. for some reason, Panther didn't register as POSIX, but Tiger does. i found this out recompiling the other day under Tiger and was greeted with the lovely error "POSIX code not completed yet" after some #ifdef statements.

from the looks of it, and i haven't delved that deep into the code, the POSIX portion is for timers. Carbon includes functionality for that, but I haven't had the chance to test it out. i've started ripping apart the code a little, but i don't have anything anywhere near testable (or even compilable) yet.

i'm attempting to use the software with a BR-3 interface on an ISO9141 car.

using VPC in your carputer? For shame, you just couldnt wait to have a mac in yer automobile you had to go all slummy on me.

VPC shouldnt be running on a carputer, if its not out for MAC wait or figure something else out. I refuse to run VPC in a carputer setup.

Actually, NO. I am running it on my iBook, for OBDII only. My carputer is a MacMini, and it probably won't be running on that at all.

But, you are more than welcome to run what ever you want on your Carputer, but don't criticize others for finding solutions that you don't approve of.

I can't believe I'm replying to this but,
NO frontend NO good GPS and NO ODBII for mac.
I can't understand why he is temporarily using VPC.

By the way I don't run any windows machines, and I am a Mac only technician.
just stating the truth.

heh... how about running VNC to a PC for using iGuidance and OBDII? I've got my hardware ready for the mac install, but I'm running a PC until I can get "worthy" navigation. Both OBD and navigation are "occasional use only" so I'm thinking of using the PC in some sort of 2ndary power switch configuration. Yes... I have too much money and too much trunk space.... oh yea... and I need a 2nd battery
