Thanks for the links! I've also found a list of GPS software for various receivers here:

http://www.gpsy.com/gpsinfo/software.html

The home page: http://www.gpsy.com/index.html has a lot of information on GPS for the Mac as well.

It appears that if you have a Keyspan serial to USB converter and an NMEA compatible receiver that you can use any Nav program that reads standard NMEA sentences.

I know my Royaltek Sapphire spits out standard NMEA protocol. It has a USB output and on the PC I use a software driver to port the data from USB to serial port.

Since I don't need a serial port converter, it seems like I could just plug in the receiver and if it is recognized by the USB port, and the nav software gives you the option of using a GPS receiver on the USB port, it might work?

Can anyone running Route 66 give me an idea of how they are connecting their receiver to their Mac?

The GPSy page has a demo download that works for 15 minutes at a time. I may go through the effort of digging my GPS cable out of my console and trying the free software just to see.

If it works, I'm sending a giant fruit basket to Shakes.

why are you converting your USB receiver to serial in windows? is it a limitation of your gps software? Most packages I'm aware of allow you ti use a USB receiver (i'm using routis)

I assumed mac GPS would act like windows GPS in the that all NMEA devices are recognized by NMEA compatible software. I was thinking the driver for the GPS receiver would be your issue.

this is the one I have but there's no mention of mac support (or windows for that matter, so who knows) http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...em_description

I don't know why I convert it in Windows. It came with a serial bridge driver and the installation instructions said to use it. I did, and it works. I sort of thought you had to have a USB driver to get it to work, and since it didn't come with one I figured it didn't have one.

I think you're right about the GPS software. It's just that little jump from the USB port to the software itself that I think I'm confused on. Looking around a bit more, I see that the Garmin and Magellan USB GPS units don't work with the Mac because there is no driver. I don't know if that is because they have proprietary data streams or NMEA additions that have to be handled, or whether that is simply true of all USB GPS' on the Mac.

More digging to do!

Driver for OS 10.2 - 10.3

I have the RoyalTek USB Sapphire gps, and had no problems with it running on Panther connected to my PB. I have not tested this under Tiger and I wonder if it is even needed.

Here is the driver I am using...

PL-2303 v1.06

Looks like the actual company that releases this has an update v1.09 to support Tiger... Prolific Web Site

Beauty! Thanks rdrr. If this works, I won't need to buy another GPS.

Your USB GPS will work with VPC

...if you've got PC software that supports it. Just plug it in, open Windows settings in VPC, and select it in the USB Devices setting. It may not be accessible to Mac software while VPC is using it.
