Linux Apps
Iam not sure if I am correct or not...I am new to Mac's and know virtually nothing about linux but wouldnt it be possible to use a linux Car PC front end like Dashpc due to the unix backend in OS X?? If it would be possible, even with a little work from people that know what they are talking about unlike myself this could be a very good solution to everyones problems. However...if I am totally wrong please try to not laugh too hard for my stupid comments.....like I said I dont know the first thing about programming.

I am talking out of my butt because I am not a programer by trade, but I think it is the Gnome or KDE that might throw a monkey wrench into it. but... Open office uses X11... I have complied quite a bit of command line stuff. (ie Netbios translation. etc.) I don't know much about things that use gnome and KDE........Well.... what about running yellow dog linux on the mac and using that as a front end.......Well I would miss OS X though.... Just a silly rant, don't mind me.

There's no dual boot. When you boot the Mac, you're in Unix. The GUI runs as a front end called the "Finder". To access the shell, you simply launch the terminal window and you're in the bash shell. You can set it up so it doesn't boot the GUI, but I've never done it.
As far as running Linux apps on the Mac, I know it is possible to recompile Unix apps for BSD, but I have never done it.
Pycar is written in Python and could theoretically be compiled for Mac Python, but it's beyond me how to do it.

Not true. You can install Linux and dual boot between it and Mac OS. On one of my powerbooks I can triple boot between Mac OS 9, X and Linux.

Like I said before this is really not my field.....but wouldnt it be easier to just recompile one of these apps to be used in os x than to start from the ground up like the ccar project. Granted Ccar is a great looking front end; with respect to time wouldnt this be the quicker option?

Sorry. I misunderstood. Thought the question was whether you had to select one over the other. With OSX, it IS Unix. No need to bother with dual booting.
@hockey999 - Why don't you wander over to the Linux forum and ask if anyone knows anything about this? I think our problem is that we don't have any experience doing what you're asking.
It's not a bad idea, I just don't think anyone here has any experience doing this.

If OSX has the various GNU tools (make, gcc, etc), you can try installing the appropriate libraries and compiling it. Watch the errors and fix things until it compiles cleanly

I can port DashPC over to the mini. The only problem, however, is that I don't have a Mac Mini.
If someone loans me one, I'll do the port. I won't install it in the car, but I'll just port the app and the code.
Kind regards,
Chris Bergeron
