Visual Basic on a Mac

So if VB works for a mac, why not port some of the VB PC front ends?

Or am I out of line?

Doesnt VB let you control thru ports n stuff, does it do that for mac?

REALBASIC allows the porting of PC VB code to a universal code that can work on Mac, PC, and Linux. REALBASIC allows the hooking into the completely different API (application protocol interface) that these three major operating systems offer. REALBASIC's porting guide from VB to their system is here:
http://www.realsoftware.com/realbasi...ngvisualbasic/

However, Visual Basic itself doesn not work natively on a Mac.

The barrier to entry to do these conversions are:
A)Almost all of the VB frontends are closed source
B)Its $500 for the professional licence. The academic is $419.30. This does not even include the subscriptions to stay up-to-date.

Anybody that wanted to do this conversion would have to charge $$ to help fund it or take a hit in the wallet.

No problem :-) Visual Basic is only made to work on Windows according to Windows API. Apple has done the same thing with Xcode and Cocco.

REALBasic is the middle man that can talk to both under the same language.

You would use Visual Studio to create your front end, then run that code through REALBasic and it would *cross your fingers* make the correct conversions to a format that the mac can compile, etc.

That is, if I'm following what Kandyman just said.

The problem I see with RealBasic when making something as complex as a front-end is that there are too many windows API calls, objects/components/references that are only available for windows. I couldn't for instance port the Mappoint or the MapMonkey controls into Mac/Linux (specially considering the applications are not available in those platforms). For Linux there's WINE, and I hope it gets to a point where you can basically run any windows application without having to fine-tune everything. For Mac, there's VirtuaPC, but then if you're running Linux/MacOS just to run windows applications in it, what's the point ?
